A LITTLE GUN HISTORY

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. >From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

China established gun control in 1935. >From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. >From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
–––– ––––––––––––- ––––––––––––-

Uganda established gun control in 1970. >From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. >From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––-

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own Government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:

List of 7 items:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent.

Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent.

Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort, and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

All good points, but it will fall on stubbornly deaf ears. Funny how the anti-gun group chooses to ignore those facts.

Speaking of gun control. Did anyone else watch the Brady Group Propaganda Show.. er 20/20 yesterday evening? That was possibly the most one-sided reporting I have ever seen.

Sorry, I usually try to stay away from these kinds of posts but I just have to speak up my mind here:

Do you really believe that the Soviet dissidents, the Armenians, the german and european Jews (don't forget about Gypsies and other minorities), the Chinese political dissidents, the Maya indians, the Christians in Uganda and the "educated people" in Cambodia would have had a realistic chance to defend themselves hadn't there been a gun control? Come on... :hmm:

Maybe, maybe not, those facts are irrelevant when an armed man breaks in your house to rape your wife while you watch and the shoot you both and take what they want. If they break in my house, they can first meet my Boxer, then my Sig 9MM.

I saw the advertisements for that and just laughed. I didnt get a chance to watch it though.

All I know is the last time my gun jumped up and tried to shoot me by itself I freaked out. We need to get them under control before they start hurting people. :laugh2::laugh2:

i watched it. it was tripe. they gave a student a gun in a simulated lecture hall. a masked gunmen came in and started shooting. because the student couldnt get the gun out, didnt take cover, etc diane sawyer concluded that guns are bad. nevermind the fact that the "gunman' was a lifelong police firearm instructor who obviously knew which kid had the gun. and they didnt even address the VT incident where the guy went from room to room...perhaps the person in the next room would have time to draw their weapon....

there were other problems as well, but that one sticks out the most.

What really got me was the long tight teeshirt over the weapon. I am sure that was done on purpose just to make things go really bad.

It was fairly obvious that gun control was on the way once the power changed.

they'll have to pry the SPAS 12, Ak-47 and Ar-15 out of my cold dead hands.

Anti gun group..... "x number of people are killed by guns every year. If we control guns we can make the world a happy place"

Yup take the guns so as stated in this post the bad guys can run rampant with their guns. Genious! Why didnt someone think of that before?

Feel good groups live in some twisted version reality. I guess I will be a bad guy if push comes to shove. " You can have my gun when you pry it out of my cold dead hands"

How did Australia, a politically stable country which has never had a civil war, get lumped in with countries which at the times quoted were going through political and social upheaval, as a way to illustrate the supposed evils of gun control?

Just for clarification, the gun buy-back scheme was introduced back in 1996, after the Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania, and was a buy-back of semi and fully automatic weapons only. Hand guns still exist.

Criminals will always find a way of procuring weapons, as the nicities of abiding by the law are lost on them. Australia has never had a strong culture of gun ownership anyway and most of the firearms owned outside the criminal fraternities would have been rural people, those on the land, farmers and the like.

There were gangland wars in Victoria during the last decade or so, criminal families taking each other out in Melbourne for control of the illicit drug market. I would think that this had some impact on the increase in homocides in that state.

Armed robberies? How many were perpetrated on banks and other places of business, as opposed to the home invasion type robbery? I don't have the figures but going by a what gets reported most armed robberies would be on places such as banks, post offices, clubs and pubs, places where there are substantial amounts of cash to justify the risk of pulling an armed robbery.

America and Australia are similar in some ways, but vastly different in others, and our respective societies views on gun ownership is one of them. We don't feel the need to have a gun to feel safe in our society. Crime figures may be going up, they may be going down. They way they are recorded can change, they can be fudged for whatever reasons by various authorities.

I'm not about to get into a debate about gun ownership here, I've read other threads on this subject in this forum and have learnt that each has their own views and they will not be changed on them, whatever side of the arguement they are on.

I just wanted to make the point, as an Australian, that it's grossly infair to make a comparison between us, a country with a stable and robust democracy with countries that were going through political and social turmoil, or were under the rule of some type of dictatorship at the times quoted. We don't round up political disidents here and have them shot. Given we started off as nation of criminals dumped here by the British, I think we have turned out pretty well as a society and a country.
