Australia only has kangaroos, not sharks. The news post is a lie.
and dropbears
The Great Barrier Reef is just nears Queensland Australia where Shark go to breed and eat

unfortunately they go from WA (where this was) all along the coast up to the reef .... then back again.
being that dust & the use are similar size imagine a shark swimming from Los Angeles to Boston through along the coast if mexico wasn't there and all the way along the coast was sharks just stopping by beaches like they were a truck stop.
and forget about join along the top end that's where all the crocs are.
this country is pretty brought with danger by land, sea & air anyway you look at it.I stay in the city.them guys don't like concrete

Sad, but these things happen in natural systems. Humans are very quick to forget we are still members of this natural system.

I'm pretty sure this is an organized terror campaign. East Coast newspaper editors recently received a manifesto demanding an end to finning, the imprisonment of tooth-necklace manufacturers, and the brining of the Great Lakes and their establishment as a recreational area. A faction of makos and tigersharks are pushing for annual human sacrifices, too.

Funny thing... I'm more terrified by being attacked by a shark when I'm in a swimming pool that when I am in the ocean... Strange but true.

A few weeks ago my wife came down to see me here in New Smyrna Beach. She wanted to go swimming...in the ocean. I reminded her that NSB is the shark attack capital of the US. She scoffed at this, and as I don't swim, nor do I know how, I watched her paddle out into the surf...on the other end of the food chain. Fortunately all went well and she didn't get eatin'. That night we were watching the news and a quarter mile north of where we were a surfer had his foot and part of his shin chewed off by a shark. She was pretty pale after hearing this and she hasn't been in the ocean since.

You can't control nature and killing animals because they caused harm isn't the answer either. We are food, just like every other living organism. Respect your environment and know your surroundings.

I'm an avid scuba diver. Many of my favorite dives have been those where I've seen sharks.

Some thoughts, in no particular order, to no one in particular:

  • Great whites prefer colder water, the seals that are their preferred food source are found in cold water. Swimmers and surfers from about a 30' depth look a lot like seals.
  • This incident happened in cold waters. Rottnest Island is near Perth, which is just about as far as you can get from Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef and still be in Australia.
  • Sharks often "see" with their mouths. Great whites and most other sharks don't find that humans taste good. Most great white attacks on humans are single bites, which they tend to spit out, then move on. Unfortunately, that one bite from a great white can easily be fatal. Regardless, Peter Benchley was an idiot; there are no rogue man-eating great whites in the ocean.
  • The most dangerous situations around a great white would be:
    • on the surface in murky water (i.e. masquerading as a seal)
    • in chummed waters
    • around spearfishing
  • The deceased diver was reported to be spearfishing in limited visibility, when his two dive buddies weren't in the water to watch his back.
  • Over the years I've noticed that these stories tend to go in cycles. This will generate hysteria because an American died, but what he was doing (solo diving while spearfishing in great white territory) was almost intentionally risky. The story will quickly die down, hopefully before some "Quint clone" decides to get a bigger boat.
Trivia question: Does anyone remember what the number one news story was on Sept. 10th, 2001?

On land with gun? Top of the food chain.
In Ocean or in Grizzly lands w/o gun? Food.

I'm bored.

I think I will go surfing dressed in my black (they were out of my favorite color...seal brown) wet suit in an area populated with Great White Sharks that are known to attack surfers and divers mistaking them for....wait for it....seals!!

Can anybody tell me what's wrong with this scenario??

You forgot to bring your speargun to "green up" the water with fish blood (blood looks green at depth) to attract Jaws.

:hmm:

I've heard from several divemasters that menstruation is more of a shark repellant than an attractant.

Apparently, they're sorta like us. :laugh2:

Western Australia seems to have taken over from South Australia as the Great White attack capital of Australia over the past few years... seeing them just outside the surf break is pretty common but that's not enough to deter most of the local surfers, but as always the dangerous shark is the one you don't see coming.
