Jet City make some nice amps. The Egnater Tourmaster 4212 might be worth looking into. Boogie make some of the best bullet proof american high gain amps (next to the 5150). Me I just stack some overdrive pedals into a DRRI or I use this:

Not what you'd call a high gain amp but stacked with a good OD pedal it will make some serious noises! Not technically an american amp but the design is "borrowed" from Dumble so it's in the ball park

I got a Mesa LSS used for $1200, but I think they are less than $2000 new. I love that amp more than words can describe. Never had any high end boutique amps, but been through the usual suspects, Marshall, Orange, VOX, Laney, Fender, etc.

To me the LSS is just the perfect amp. Tried other Mesa's and didn't really care for them.

Watching an interview with Mike Soldano right now and he said the different between 50 and 100 watts is only 3db and 100watts isn't twice as loud. Make sense to buy a 50 watt amp because they're much cheaper ad you're not losing much volume.

Remember the Decibel scale isn't linear as well, so 40dB is a hell of a lot more than double of 20dB

You guys might like to look on the Vendor's Classified forum here on MLP. Last time I looked Soul Tramp had a great deal on two different amp heads. You need to check them out.
