Pulled from Chuck Prophet's Twitter...

Three venues within half a mile of me are now gone.

gone because new neighbors made noise complaints ?

Two of them had been subject to noise complaints and had to spend a lot trying to reduce it. Then developers bought the buildings and made them into flats. One was just gentrified outright.

"So please consider yourself warned. If you purchase this property you have no grounds to complain about the music or the noise".

Wanna bet?

Sad, but true.

I know, historical precedence doesn't seem to count for much. It would be nice if an official or judge just looked at the dates and told the plaintiff to f*ck off and stop wasting everyone's time but sadly that doesn't tend to happen.

It's the worst. Me, me, me.

If my dad read this story he'd say "in my day, a few guys from the bar would pay them a visit. And that would be the end of that". :laugh2: He'd mean it too. People fought for their neighborhoods and dealt with problems themselves. Now people call the cops to complain about noise. Ugh.

Here in Montreal we had two fantastic music venues when I was in my 20s, the Maples Inn with live bands and the Edgewater Hotel and Bar with a great bar with live music, combined with a fantastic outdoor pool area that was just heaven in the summer. Both locals were relatively close to each other and both eventually were shut down due to complaints from home owners in the area.

The thing is that residents had valid reasons to complain such as people speeding and driving drunk in the area after the bars closed and others puking and pissing on private properties in the mainly residential area. The police tried for a couple of years to get things under control but to no avail and both locations were eventually shut down. So while some property owners do complain without valid reason, often the patrons of the bars do nothing to help their case either.

EDIT: After a bit of looking around on the net, the Maples actually burnt down, probably arson, in 1985. It was actually the site of the first mini-golf course in Canada!
