I'll prepare myself for the proverbial yawns from the senior members, but I bought a AFD VOS last week. I'm not a fan boy, but certainly appreciate the prowess of Slash's guitar playing. And in particular, the recorded tone he has been able to achieve.
I'm a Page fan all the way, but I will not buy a guitar I can't play. So Ebay is a nice place to justify price and nothing more for me. That being said, the chance to snag a great player is few and far between. I tried every R0, R8 and R9 in our local store. All beautiful instruments. But they lacked that physical connection. When I finally played the AFD, one thing was abundantly clear on this guitar. Sans amplifier, it was significantly louder than any other guitar I played. The sound seemed to resonate through the entire body of the guitar. And for me, the neck profile was way more comfortable. I am sure I'm not alone in being overwhelmed by the playibility and sound of a particular guitar... so that was it. I bought her right then and there!
For those who question a professional seup, do not skip this important step! Although my setup was included with the guitar (and the guitar was pleked), I would have gladly paid to receive the best action I have ever achived on a guitar. I will imagine this is in large part due to the hand build in the Gibson Custom Shop. But this guitar will have me neglecting the other 6 in my possesion for quite some time.
One other thing that struck me was the pickups and electronics. So much more responsive than what I am acustomed to. Loud and bright, but as you dial it down so many magic tones.
If you see one on the rack, don't skip by it because it's a signature guitar. You never know what tone may lay underneath!!!
