Yeah... those pesky, nasty, smelly little creatures aka customers... can't live with'em, can't kill'em! ;)

:laugh2: I never have a problem selling them but it always leaves me with no pickups or, having to build some for myself because I'm tired of looking at an empty guitar.

Even though, resistance wise, they are a little far mismatched

Well... actually, they're not really that "mismatched".

In the past I had access to very sophisticated measuring equipment in a contractor lab for the military.

I've found out that when shooting for matching the bridge p'up with the neck, (output-wise, averaging) the difference in coil winding was 13-15%. Doing a simple math, if you wind a HB with the nominal 5000 turns of AWG 42 spn, the matching bridge coil would be wound to 5650-5750 turns.

If you measure the neck p'up @ 7.48K, the matched bridge would be about 8.4K.

This is just for the average output in mV. Tone matching is a completely different animal, and by the time I got into this, the access to the lab was no longer granted.

Anyway, in that way I got to see for myself a small but I believe significant part of basic p'up design.

I LOVE reading about pickups and magnets and what not...especially when the winders on here start sharing information that I didn't know before.

LOVE IT!

Thanks fellas! You all rock!! :dude:

Since we are the subject of weaker mags in the neck pickup my favorite is an A3 as it is much clearer and more complex than an A2 and pairs nicely with A4 or A5 in the bridge.
A3 can be sweet in the neck I agree. But A2's are very tricky mags, can be complex as hell or a little restricted. highly dependable on the source

this discussion has been great. I've been wondering about an A3 in the neck instead of A2 now...... especially if it sonically pairs a little better with the A4.

Based on LtKojak's advice in the past, I had tried out a rough cast a4 in the neck and rough cast unoriented a5 in the bridge on a Seymour Duncan 59 set. I was VERY pleased with the results.

Just to tell my recent comparism: i changed a stock Seymour Duncan Seth neck mag to a degaussed one from an Ant Set and then to an A3. The difference between the 3 are subtle but the Ant mag gave the most clear, woody sounding and low volume pickup, the A3 had a tad more mids and sounded fuller. The Seth mag was the strongest magnet (even stronger than my other A2s) and compensated the thicker mids with more highs.
If you change an Ant bridge to a full charged magnet, you get fantastic magnet for a neck pickup for free (and signed by Seymour).
