Hi Guys,
I've been meaning to do a side-by-side of my two GTs to show some of the differentiating features between the early Norlin year guitars...finally getting to it. Many of the pictures I’ve seen here and elsewhere show the features independently, which makes the subtle differences tougher to comprehend. Lining them up next to each other seems to present a clearer picture. I’ll go through the different bits and pieces of the two guitars.

The Guitars
The first one is what I believe is a 1973 Deluxe. To my knowledge, it’s completely original, including the original bound frets. The second one is a 1971 Deluxe. That one is a bit more of a mutt, with different hardware, routed cavities, etc. It has been played a ton, and I had it refretted when I bought. I didn’t do any close-ups on the modified bits and pieces of that one. So here we go…

Headstock and Logo
The ’73 has the narrower headstock with smaller wings when compared to the ’71. I took some pics from different angles to try and capture the nuances. The top of the ‘71’s wider headstock curls up a bit more on the tips, and is generally a little more defined. The center dip on the top edge is also deeper on the ’71. The ‘wings’ are obviously larger.

The Gibson logo is also slightly different. The ’71 is more squared off on all of the edges of the letters. The openings in the b and o are different, as is the tail end of the n. The “Les Paul Model” script is pushed higher on the headstock on the ’71. Trussrod covers appear identical.

The serial numbers are very similar. Both are engraved, with both having the “Made in the USA” stamp. The tuners are slightly different, and I’m not sure the ones on the ’71 are original. The ’73 has the double rings, with “Gibson Deluxe” written on them. The ’71 has no writing on them, a single ring, and they appear to be slightly larger.

'73 on the left, '71 on the right...this one makes it easier to see the width difference.

The headstock angle is the same on both, and the volute size and shape is almost identical.
Neck
Both are 3-piece mahogany. The neck on the ’71 is more of a 50’s shape to my hands. It’s thicker from end to end, and more rounded. The ’73 is slimmer and a little flatter down the spine. The two are different where they reach the attachment point to the body. The ’71 has a shorter arc on its heel (which looks like my 2013 R9), while the ’73 has an arch with taller sides. I didn’t measure, but the width feels the same on both, at both ends. The ’73 has a transitional tenon. I didn’t pull the pickup on the ’71 to check, but I’m assuming it does as well.

Electronics

Pot codes date each of the guitars, and appear to be original on both. I have no idea on the caps. I’m not sure if those little yellow ones were original or added later on the ’73. None of the original solder joints are broken on the ’73 pots.

Binding & Body

The ’71 has the thicker binding in the cutaway compared to the ’73. Binding elsewhere appears to be the same. The body shape and size feel the same on both. The two different slabs of mahogany on the ’73 are different colors, whereas the ’71 looks identical on either side of the pancake.

I'll post some more detail pics of the '73 to use for ID purposes, but I think that's it for now. Let me know if anyone has any specific things they'd like me to compare between these two. Thanks.

Here are some more detail pics on the '73. I think it's all original (if not, feel free to correct me! :)). When I get a chance I'm also going to compare the hard cases the two came in. Both are very old, from the '60's I believe.

Nice pics.

Yeah that width on headstock is pretty different. Once you hold enough of them, you see it right away.
1973 for sure. 99% of deluxes from this time(from what I`ve taken notice of )start with 1 in serial#.
Wiring channel in right place for a late 73:)

Really very useful stuff. It's so helpful to have clear info for dating these guitars.

Thanks gents. I'm still learning my way around these things, so it's really fun to see all of the info I read on this forum and elsewhere in-person. Then you sort of go, "Ahhhh...okay, that makes sense." :thumb:

Both guitars are identical in weight at 9.9 lbs.

I'll get some case pics up later today most likely.

Okay...on to the cases. The first one is from my '71. Based on what I found on latesixtieslespauls.com, this one is a Model 0537 Faultless plush case, Version A1 (the oldest type). It has three of the 50's style flip up latches. It is on the top in the pic below:

Okay...the case that came with my '73 is a mystery to me. I can't seem to find any pics online of one like it. As you can see in my first pic above, it has a pinched neck with a waist. Other features are fairly similar to the other case. Overall dimension, weight, etc. The interior gold color is a little darker, the neck cradle is deeper, and it also has the Excelsior latches, but they're all the modern type. If anyone can give me info on this one I'd appreciate it!

Cool thread. I often wondered what motivated Gibson to change their identity so many times.
I mean, has Coke or GM or IBM done the same?
Jeez, Apple would be a Pear by now. (and Tim Cook is considering it now!)

that was my thinking GT....does it not look like the second case is more for a semi-hollow body (ES style) etc?

the body flare seems to be so big compared to a LP case?

would be great to see the guitars laid in the case, if it is not too big of a PITA....

Great comparison! :thumb:

Doesnt have the 71 a bit thicker body? I often observed that 70 and 71 Les Pauls have generally a bit thicker body than 72 and later ones. Necks are often thicker too from 70 and 71 than later.

Headstock shapes and logos changed too, on Les Paul Customs too.

They often varied piece to piece in many aspects like for example neck angle or tailpiece height, headstock shape etc. Early 70s was especially very inconsistent era.

Thanks guys. I didn't think the second one was an LP case by looking at it, but it fits like a glove...every bit as good as the other case. That's what has my scratching my head.:hmm:

Here's the Faultless...

I'll have to break out the ruler and check them. I think they're pretty darn close though.

Totally agree!:thumb:

From memory (or maybe a dream) there was a yellow lined case back then that was universal for SG and LP. Neither looked totally comfortable in it.
