I've noticed turning down the tone on the bridge pickup actually affects the output as well, taking some of the heat off which helps in balancing the pickups. Anything else doesn't get that old sound.

makes sense as they are passive(subtractive/resistive) potentiometers. You are essentially subtracting frequencies,so it must have an overall impact on the volume of what remains under the curve..I'm bored and your post has been sitting in the back of my mind.no expert,so just imho, and what my ears tell me.I will be corrected by those who know more,as mine is a laymans explanation.
