Good morning all~ Forgive me as it's been a while since I've owned a LP or similar with a standard 2 p/u, 2-Vol,, 2-Tone setup... It's a Dean Hardtail that has had the original p/u's replaced with some X2N ceramic clones that sound fine, but I sense that something is amiss.. When I'm in the MIDDLE position and I fully back off the volume of either p/u, I lose all volume once either p/u is all the way off. 50's vs. 60's wiring? I read that the 50's wiring helps you retain the tone when you turn down, but will that wiring give me independent Vol control? Maybe a good link or two to some Schematics would be fab!! It's 95 in the shade, so I'm one lazy sod, but thnx in advance....

As an aside, the 10.3K Neck p/u is overpowering the 16.6K Bridge, regardless of how much i compensate the p/u heights,,,??....

Hmm... Go to the other guitars thread and ask them there. This is the Gibson Les Paul thread and that is not even a Les Paul.

Certainly most Gibson style controls do this.
The pots work by allowing signal to bleed off to ground as you roll them down in the numbers. ”Wide open on ten” means the pots are offering the most resistance to ground (500kohms nowadays).
If you tank either volume pot to zero -with both pickups on- the signals will be going to ground: no signal gets to the amp.

Fender style: the switch shorts unused pickups to ground. Gibson style will short both the pickups to ground through the joined toggle connection if you dial either one down near zero.

That's normal Gibson style wiring.

The volume pots can be wired to work independently, so in the middle position you can turn one pickup all the way down. https://www-premierguitar-com.cdn.a...arage-decouple-your-les-pauls-volume-controls

But with independent volumes there's a bigger loss of treble when rolling down the volume.
-----------------------
'50s wiring is a completely different thing. It involves the way the tone circuits are connected.

You can do independent volumes with '50s wiring, but you can also do '50s wiring with normal interactive volumes.

Interactive volume control is standard.
Because of the way the wiring is done, 50s wiring must be interactive, since the tone control is downstream of the volume pot.
60s wiring may be done interactive or independent, but fully independent also creates the potential for noise in the amp when both volume controls are turned down.

Very nice, & great sense of community & helpfulness, friend.... Your knowledge is probably vast, but your attitude stinks,,, & all the practice in the world can't help that!!

You're posting about a Dean Hardtail in the Gibson Les Paul Thread, there is another thread for Other Guitars, which in case you're not sure, you're guitar is not a Gibson Les Paul. You have a Dean Hardtail, which is a guitar other than a Gibson Les Paul. Just stating a fact here my friend, not practicing to have a better attitude.

You should post your Dean Hardtail issue under the Other Guitars Thread. Also, there is a thread to discuss Pickups and Wiring as well, which is the Tonefreaks thread which might be even better to discuss issues with your wiring.

You're welcome for directing you to the right place here at MLP.
