A Donna that doesn't look like Donna

The tops I can see varying widely. Just to hard to match. The finish color however on a big majority of the Donna's is just way off. It's something they should be able to match completely. It's almost like Gibson never looked at the Original. Not sure who they have painting this run or approving them afterwards but almost all of them miss the mark badly except for a few exceptions. Most of the vintage cherry sunburst TH's look more like Donna finish wise than the actual Donna CC's.

It's not just Sweetwaters pictures. You can go to Wildwood and other dealers pictures and see the same off finish color.

Yes we all agree tops will vary, and I grant a certain level of leeway with regards to that as I know it's impossible to replicate exactly. But when you take YEARS to source the wood they should be closer and the paint as well. The Donna I played, the coloring was way better than this, but it was pretty close to my TH cherry color, maybe a hair lighter in the red.

As I said Donna's are decent guitars, just too much for my taste for what they are supposed to be. Mike's got a good one, as I knew would be the case, there are about 10 of them that are painted well and have a good close top. His is one. This one is not.

I've only seen a couple of the Donna CCs in person, and on the ones I have seen the color was terrible. Here's a photo posted on the other forum, showing one of the Donna CCs on the far left, next to the real Donna. There was no yellow in the middle of the guitar! It looked ridiculous!

Total fail- I can't see why anyone would pay that much for a Donna if it doesn't closely mirror the original. So much for "handpicked" special treatment on each one they were shouting about as these first were available

There's more where that came from...........:hmm:

And there are some goodies also:cool:
Over on the LPF there's a veritable cornucopia of variation for all to see.

Tommy, IMHO getting the tops close is fine but totally stuffing the color is not. It is just another Quality issue at Gibson. A highly priced CC needs a little extra TLC on the way down the line.

You also have to take in to account the way the Guitar was photographed as getting the Reds correct is not easy to do, unless you know what you are doing. In addition everyone's screen will produce a different looking result...............so in effect we are all seeing something a little different.

I use a Dell Laptop...........colors always look meh! My Samsung Monitor improves things. If I want to be fussy I use my Son's iMac because that 27" screen is pretty much spot on (he does design work on it).

Mike's looks nice & I agree with Frank.............this looks cool but it ain't no Donna............& I must admit I am now preferring the look of a nice original Cherry Sunburst vs. for example, Lemonburst............which are a dime a dozen now (compared to back in 2007 when they were not so common).

End of the Day, it is not my money. If someone wants to spend up to 10 large on a CC who am I to tell them they are crazy. I happen to like Replicas, as you know, I'm sure there are members who think I'm crazy. :laugh2: :)

It would be nice if Gibson fixed a few of these niggling Quality issues I keep going on about, especially for the money being charged.

Cheers, Rudi

I agree, Gibson blew it with these two. The dealer should send those back
as rejects. Maybe Tom should step in and let Gibson know they do not meet
the minimum standards bordering on embarrassment.
I have only seen about half dozen that even come close to the original,
but that is just my opinion, I guess everyone see flame and finish differently.
To the potential buyer, as long as they are content, who am I to judge.
Maybe they are killer sounding? Maybe just the pictures?

Looks like Mike picked a nice one, goes to show that most CC's are all
over the spectrum, not just this run.

Doesn't seem like a burst Gibson should have much trouble replicating IMO. Not sure why they insist on spraying the majority of them with way to much red in the center.

To be the most hyped up CC to date Gibson really dropped the ball with this run. I would have thought they would have been extremely picky with these but it's almost the exact opposite.

Wow, that's actually a beautiful guitar...but it ain't no Donna!

I am not saying that it doesn't look great but if it costs 10500$ because it is exact replica I think that at least the finish should match.
