Hi all. I'm thinking of picking up an 81 Les Paul Custom. The only thing that is that I would have expected the pickups to be Shaw's. The pickups are stamped 1979 which is before Shaw's were supposed to be made so they are probably T-Tops. It seems odd that an 81 has 79 pickups. Has anyone seen this before?

There is no end to the oddities in this period. Especially in transition times where you merely use up old parts as you find them.
Kalamazoo during the 75 transition year was also similar where the new hardware and construction (and ser# format) was phased in.

Yes,.. my 1978 LP Custom has T-Tops stamped 1976 on the neck pup and 1978 on the bridge pup and both are original to the guitar.... normal Norlin “oddity”.

Even the pot dates can vary a year or two,... which adds to the frustration of dating these guitars prior to 1977 serial number change.

Nice Custom by the way

Thanks. It all looks original and the solder looks untouched. Plays really well so I think I'll go for it.
