Looking at one in the UK and it looks to be a two piece body, was that ever the case?

No. All of them were one piece.

I'm understanding through research that a few of the earlier ones were made out of maple.

Guitar HQ is an excellent source for detailed info, and it's accurate.

Their Fender information is very good and extremely detailed.
Particularly useful is the progression of the "Fender" script badges used on cases and amplifiers, with the "tail", small vs large (R), and "Made in USA"
Compounding the issue is dealers not selling the same case that was shipped with the guitar, so it's not uncommon to see a legit '75 guitar with a '71 case.

Good to know, will bookmark for future reference. Although its not good news for the chap selling it. its a refin hence a realistic price if genuine, there is an obvious centre seam visible from front and and back hence me asking.

took a bit of a gamble on this 56/57 husk from a vintage dealer as serial was gone and most parts when they got it...the longer tailpiece bushings into the wood are original with no sign of damaged wood from post lean from the 54/55's you see on occasions was one of his reasons for estimate for 1956 or 1957...was a bit concerned but i took a shot..opportunity was there.

stripped , neck repair, no serial....but i liked the price as i wanted a player, this fit the bill.

put 2 coats of Tru-oil and a light coat of clear lacquer as i just wanted to see how it would play , not concerned on looks, mojoaxe tailpiece and long studs, grovers, bareknuckle true grit, cts pots....plays great and i am happy...worth the risk..

i will hunt original parts in the future as they are pricey even when you find them, but i like it!

P90 is a bit farther from the bridge on a 1957 single cut and forward.
