I just saw a listing on Facebook for a 53 Les Paul custom. Question is did they even make them in 53? Secondly the guy claims that it has no serial number and that that was normal for the early ones. Is any of this true? It’s not a bad looking guitar considering it’s age. I am just curious is out of my price range. But I’d like to know for an education. Thank you for anyone that can answer this.

I am not an expert but I believe 53 was the first year. My 52 does not have a serial number nor do early 53's, so its possible

The Les Paul Custom indeed appeared in late '53, and it is true that the early ones had no serial numbers,

I’m no expert in vintage instruments, but be very careful/cautious and do lots of research before buying.

Yes, 53 was the first year for customs. I know of one for sale locally.

As others have said - Yes, 1953 was the first year. And yes, the early ones don't have a serial number. The earliest ones also have a unique trait of having a shorter headstock, where the split diamond goes under the truss rod cover.
