Just to broaden the question a bit further ..... what would the ramifications be of plugging 4 ohm output into a 16 ohm cab ??? Too much of a mismatch ? This stuff messes with my head big-time...LOL

It would probably still work, but it would sound fairly weak, IMO. The general rule is double the ohmage number, and that's your best mismatch.

So--

4 ohm amp -- 8 ohm load

8 ohm amp -- 16 ohm load

...and so on...of course it's BEST to have a matched output/load.

Yeah, in the link I posted above, they say if you mismatch too high then you get the chance of the flashback voltages and black smoke (for a tube amp). The output tubes limit the amount of current, for a higher load you'll get voltage spikes if the current is limited (voltage = current x resistance). So 4 ohm head with an 8 ohm cab is probably okay but when you move up to 16 ohm you could be asking for trouble.

You mean parallel, 8||8 = 4. In series 8 + 8 = 16.

There have been a TON of threads about this, and no real consensus. Somebody posted a link to an article buy some sort of audio professional who basically said that the Ohms ratings on transformers/speakers are so freaking liberal that it really doesn't matter what you plug into what (at least as far as damage goes, tone is another thing).
