Its been around for a wile, used for "rapid prototyping" in industry. the machines I'v seen had layers of resin hardened by laser. It took ages to do a small part though.

I liked the idea that something could be made that was imposable to make by other methods, like internal details on an object.

There was a story on the BBC a few months ago about this tech. Instead of manufacturing say circuit boards then having to distribute them worldwide you just send the information through the net, thus saving tons on manufacturing, shipping & packaging.
They did touch on the inevitable piracy that would emerge with such a technology.

I've heard of this technology through prop collector/builder circles, and it's pretty cool. That "Makerbot" kit is really tempting. :)

3d printing is big amongst 3d artists and hobbyist to have something physical of their work

a lot of guys here dabble in printing, or have their worked printed and then sometimes cast
