So I've got my eye on a couple of 335 type semis. One of them is a mint 80s Yamaha SA800 in dark red sunburst and a new Tokai ES 198, in Cherry. I can get the Tokai for £1200 and the Yamaha for around £1000.
I was wondering if anyone might have owned one of these and could advise, comment on any pros and cons... Quality of build compared to each other etc.. Really appreciate the advice guys... Cheers
Here's the Yamaha

I think you can't go wrong with either. Yamaha stuff IS bulletproof, but that Tokai looks lovely.

Both great brands. The difference would be which feels better to you. I personally prefer the look of the cherry Tokai - is it an MIJ? If it's MIC I'd take the Yamaha.

Check out Ibanez (AS153 or anything above the 100 series) and Eastman.
But I believe the Yamaha is the better of these 2.

I like both brands myself, but it depends on what you are looking for, the Yamaha is of a slightly different flavour as it is made out of beech and birch with an alder centre block, hog neck and rosewood board. poly finish and the Tokai has the standard 335 specs. Depending on the year it might be nitro finished or poly.

I'm Tokai all the way.

Another new one was just being discussed

It's hard to track the numbers based on the Yen. Looking at your pic, I'd guess that 198 is what I know as a 162.
Others here are more well versed in these than I am.

Mine is a '14 135 custom ordered with some 162 specs.
I consider it my #1 and my best purchase to date. (....and I've tried a few :laugh2: )

Not saying it's not possible, but personally, I can't imagine having gotten more bang for the buck.
It's a wonderful thing. It's one the kids will sell.
