3-piece maple tops on LP standards?

Well, on eBay right now there is a nice '92 LP Std. with an amber-flamed 3 piece maple top. Question is, does Gibson do this to round up scrap wood laying around? Does this affect the tone compared to a 2-piece? Also, are there certain years they did this? Thanks!

Gibson used 3-piece maple tops in the 70s and 80s. I don't believe I've ever seen a 92 LP with a 3-piece top.

I have no idea. It ain't mine. That was my original question along with when did they start making these? I thought only in the 70's and 80's.

My brother has a 71 LP Deluxe with a 7 piece top. Looks like a bowling alley lane. Guitar sounds great, btw...

I've always wondered what a guitar top would look like with a bunch of thin pieces, like a hardwood floor. Do you have pics of your bro's guitar? I'd love to see it.

My LPC has a 3 piece maple top, and it sounds killer... and I find it to be beautiful.

If the 3 piece tops are good enough for Slash, they're good enough for me. My 79 has a 3 piece top and a 1 piece back.
