Sadly many of these people don't live to be very old.

He's a badass, just not a very bright one IMHO.

He gets points for gorilla balls... but he tempted fate, that's for sure.

Now watch: something stupid will get him, like slipping in the shower or some such thing. Maybe he'll be done in by a pressure washer, the way I almost was...

Adrenaline is a hell of a drug.

I remember hearing about this kid a few years ago.

Watch him at work in this video from 60 Minutes - harrowing.

I thought I had seen this done years ago, by this same guy maybe. Must have been some other site at Yosemite.

Obviously an impressive feat. But I still think it is stupid as hell to do.

It probably is just a matter of time before we have a news headline. "Alex Honnold, first man to free climb EL Capitan, dies in fall."

I hope not, but one mistake and you're dead.

I respect his climbing skills, not so much his decision making skills.

Can't stand heights, I could never do anything remotely like that. My hands get sweaty when I see these climbers and crazy people hanging off cliffs or scaling 50 story buildings with no support. There is something inside their brains that blocks the fear of heights. My fear of heights is well developed.

The oldest son of my partner is a climber.
Not to downplay anything (because it's an insane accomplishment).

He climbed this route several times before his "no wires" attempt.
Set out the route himself (with ropes), made sure the path was clean, removed any loose rocks etc. etc.
All I'm saying is that it took a lot of prep. Not done on a whim.

I hope Malcolm (partner son's name) doesn't get any of these crazy idea's...
