For those who have played (and spent some time) with both, what do you think - tone, playability etc?

I have both right now - a 2019 50's Standard and a 2014 R0. No VOS or Murphy or anything else fancy. I'm thinking one has to go as they seem to overlap. I paid $1000 more for a used R0 and I'm still in the return period. I love the R0, but can't really justify both. The 50's Standard is paid for. Both play great - to me the 50's plays a bit better. Both sound great. But the R0 sounds a bit better.

I've just played them on my DSL 40 in my basement - where I play most of my gigs :)

For those who have given both a good run, through different gigging/amp situations - any opinions?

Sounds like an option might be to sell the R0 and investigate a pickup change on the 50's Standard, with potentially quite a bit of money back in your wallet.

I sold off the historics in favour of a Gibson USA Les Paul with a neck profile which suits me, and Wolfetone Legends pups.

I still see reissues I'd love to give a spin every day, though.

I am obsessed with the 50s and 60s standards.....

I always like new and don’t spend north of $3k so it’s a no brained for me....
couldn’t afford a new historic even if i didn’t love the 50s and 60s models...

I'm on the RIs camp, but I think the gap is now smaller than ever. The thinner binding on the 50s and 60s give it a more precise feeling akin to RIs. Perhaps the neck on the Standard 50s is a better fit than the R0 for you.

I don't have any real play time with reissues, but I'm completely satisfied with my Standard '60s. It's going to stick around for a while.

I only can say that I love my 60's. Simply perfect.

Not all R0s are VOS. Quite a few are gloss.

Yup, I had a 2008 R8 which was full gloss.

I believe VOS refers mostly to the non-gloss (or not quite so gloss, or whatever) finish and dull (or aged or whatever) hardware on reissues.

I would have to get a pretty awesome deal to justify a Custom Shop or Historic Reissue at this point.

I can say there is not a single thing on my new TV Yellow LP Special that I would want to see improved. It is the business.

I will be on the lookout for a 50's Standard Goldtop with P-90's. And another Firebird, too.

I’m not good at making decisions for other people. You have to decide for yourself..... besides you have both..... why would anyone else’s opinion even matter??

It sounds like you should return the R0 and see if a better one comes along.

The 60’s Standard I have is hands down the nest LP I have owned . It’s as close to perfect as you can get.
That's how I feel about mine.

But I have no hands-on with the R series.
