Hi all,

after some clarity of you don’t mind offering opinions.

I've seen a 2017 tokai ULS130F for sale and enquires about a trade for a 2017 R8 with cash my way, does anyone know much about these guitars and their worth? Not too much in my knowledge bank about tokai but it looks like a sweet guitar.

Thanks in advance

Hi,
they are great. Superb Les Pauls. As your R8, I'm pretty sure... (Why) Do you consider trading your R8?

I have a an R9 which I love (2008) and the R8 is also very nice but if either go it’s the R8. New garage roof etc so the the cost offset will help with that and I’ll get a new guitar to try out and play.
I know made in Japan is a good thing, do they have the log tenon etc?

Short tenon would not be visible in the pickup cavity.
Wouldn’t it? My understanding was that the end of the neck in the cavity just stops flat with the edge of the cavity, the protrusion (long tenon) doesn’t continue into the routed portion?

A short tenon is flush with the the front of the pickup cavity. My Gibson LP Traditional has one like that.

Long tenons can vary in length quite a bit though. My Tokais have shorter "long tenons" than some of my other MIJ guitars do.

Agreed, If it is 3/4" or 2" into the cavity it is long tenon

Question, any reason some have thinner offset long tenons (Tokai) and others are wider and more symmetrical?

sorry to tread on your thread.

No worries, more the merrier!

no idea why, the top image above is my R9 from 2008. I have a 2017 R8 or custom shop LP standard, and that’s a shorter tenon but still long?!

I think, although the tokai looks great, I shall be steering clear of this one. All the info (very little in fact) I can find on these say they should have a long neck tenon, this one does not. The short tenon image above is the Tokai. Something doesn’t sit right so I’ll go with that. If anyone is after an 2017 R8 (Custom LP Standard) let me know.

Does anyone have the specs or catalogue info for these guitars? I can’t find anything and I’m not sure on the prices etc?

I bought some B grade bodies and necks that Tokai had stored in their warehouse. Here are some photos of the neck and body so you can see them well.

All the Tokais I own are those bodies/necks and 1 husk where the body and neck had been joined, a fb had been added and a finish had been sprayed on it and they all have that same short long tenon.

My Edwards all have different tenons. The '89 prototype has a slightly shorter one than the flame top one I sold to Caretaker. And the 2011 one has a different tenon than either of those very old ones.

Fujigen's have remained pretty consistent since the Greco Mint Collection and both my History's have the same one. As soon as you see it you know it's Fujigen.

Well, I traded the R8 with cash my way and there’s nothing to say other than it was a great journey to collect the guitar and meet the previous owner, a true gent, and as for the guitar it’s simply awesome, I’m astounded at how good this thing is, I’m not feeling Gibson custom shop loss or remorse at all. The R8 was a great guitar, but for what this TOKAI is it is simply fantastic. Only thing it doesn’t have is the smell
