So apparently the only difference at this point is necks, so they ought to lower the R9 and R0 prices, as it doesn't cost double to change the neck shape. (Not that it costs double for flame maple, either, but...)

Most of the necks on the limited figured versions seem to be in line with the R9. They won't lower the price because Gibson knows how hard it is to find a R8 figured. Gibson would easily take a drop in sales on the R9. People are so used to the '59 legacy and see the players who made them famous. Back in 1958, Gibson did have a figured flametop, however, in small quantities. I've only seen one or tow in my lifetime and only pictures on the internet - not in person.

I'll take the R8 every time. They're still usually under 9 lbs and are a tremendous value. I picked up these two sub-9 lb 2013 R8 "plaintops" at the House of Guitars in Rochester. I highly recommend them. They might still have some or might be getting more in so I'd check with Curt at the HOG if you're interested. I don't think these will be around much longer.

That's exactly what i heard about the neck.... I have someone :fingersx: who is going to check a couple out for me, since I can't audition them in person. A thumbs up and I probably pull the trigger!

I was amazed at the photo's of the "figured R8's" that I saw! Your's is spectacular... Wow! At .910/1st - that's pretty much R9 size.

Yeah, The Music Zoo still has a couple of limited slightly figured R8's left with comfortable necks. Once they're gone that's it unless Gibson makes them again.

I played a '13 R8 and the big shoulders really turned me off from it. Felt more D than C to me, and I usually like big necks.

I do not know what is going on with the 2013's. I bought 2, an R9 and an R7 and they both have what I would call excessive shoulders. I would expect the R7 would not the R9 had about the same. Gibson made great R9 necks in 2010 and 2011.

The necks are all over the place , slightly different ,
yet unique to each fiddle as I've played a few R9z and R8z .

My 2010 R6 has a slightly smaller neck than this '13 does .
Weights are almost identical as well , just under 9 lbs .

** killer fiddles up ^^ there fellaz

You're right. I played a 2013 R9 VOS and the neck was bigger than the 2013 R8 VOS. It's supposed to be the other way around. Hopefully people that buy online can return the guitar if they don't like the neck. The tag is $6299 and that's if you're a sucker and pay full price, haha. All kidding aside, the R9's are at a premium for a reason. The necks should really all be very close, not all over the place.
