Hey Guys,
I own several LPs, all with 4 conductor pickups for coil tapping.

I bought a 2012 LP Standard cause I love the feel and neck , pickups are really So..So.. in my opinion and a bit muddy but thats not to worry as I am going to change them out.

I want to know if its just me but I dont find when splitting the coils on these the change is that pronounced?

When compared to a traditional pro, the tapped or single coil sound is way more dramatic on the pro and only barely noticeable on the standard.

Comments, thoughts?

no expert here but my recently purchased Studio Deluxe has taps, the bridge pick up was very close to the stings from the factory, and the Tap had a very pronounced difference, after lowering the pick up, it became more subtle, i'm mainly a p90 guy, and while it evokes that kind of single coil tone, it doesn't compare. i know they coil tap today works better than the one i had in the 90's.

Gibson is screwing with that a bit more than necessary, but it's nothing that can't be put right quickly enough. The 2012 is "fat tapped" which is to say that you're not really getting a true single coil response; more of a muted second coil in a humbucker mode.

Normally you can get serial (standard humbucking mode), parallel ( a thinner-sounding humbucking mode) and single coil (either coil, but only one at a time and not both) available via switching. From there you can begin running caps, resistors and inductors to tweak things (reduce bass, mids, treble, add delay to the second coil, and so on. I think the 2013 Standard switches from serial to parallel and NOT to single coil mode, for example.

Thanks guys, but can I somehow remove the FAT capped option so I can hear the PU's as true split?? like a trad pro???

Or will I have to put in a Page wiring harness and reset all the electronics?
I like split coils to sound split properly, ie thin and bight.

I think this splitting that is factory is dull and half assed.

I am putting a classic 57 in the neck and a bb3 in the bridge to match my trad pro.

I have a specific sound for half a dozen songs, ie in split mode but the 2012 is just not wired to do it, I want to be able to use this guitar as a close spare if I pop a string etc??

I bought a 2012 Standard back in July (and a Trad a couple weeks ago).

My Standard's switching / tap is exactly as you described - very, very subtle. If you weren't specifically listening for it, and were just casually listening, you'd probably never notice the difference. Even specifically listening, it's still subtle. The only really obvious difference I hear is when the pickup selector is in the middle position, and both volumes are pulled into "tapped" position.

I'm glad you asked about this, as I was starting to wonder about it, too. (My Traditional doesn't have the "tap", so I didn't have anything to compare the Standard's switching to).
