I'm looking for a new sound... if you had to select just 5 of the following 25 pedals for your pedal board, which would you choose, and in what order? Lets limit it to a Humbucking Lester going into any amp's clean channel.

Amplified Nation Big Bloom Overdrive (Dumbloid Clone)
Analogman King of Tone Overdrive
Analogman Peppermint Fuzz
Boss DD-7 Digital Delay
Boss FRV-1 Fender Reverb
Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive
Dunlop MXR MC404 CAE Dual Inductor Wah
Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi
Fulltone OCD Version 7
Hermida Audio Zendrive
Jetter Gear GS 124
Klon KTR
Lumpy’s Tone Shop ZII Lemon Drop
Marshall Bluesbreaker II
Maxon OD-9 Overdrive or TubeScreamer 808
Montreux Retrovibe Flanger/Chorus
Pigtronix Philosopher’s Tone Compressor/Sustainer
tc electronic TonePrint Hall of Fame Reverb
Vox V846 Sound Idea Mods CC (Custom Clyde) Wah
Xotic Effects USA BB Preamp Dynamic Overdrive

Thanks in advance for all replies...

First, what's the amp?
Second, what genre will you mostly play?

The genre can be pretty diverse and the amp can be anything with a crisp clean channel, but lets go with some Classic Rock (Stones, Zepp, Allmans, Jimi) on a Twin Reverb for starters... :)

I kinda got to my conclusion by ditching all of the pre-amp (not preamp) reverb and all but two overdrives that would compliment your amp. The fuzz was a no-brainer for me, as it's a very different and diverse effect that can be it's own thing all together or add to another gain structure for a subtle change. I picked the Vox over the Dunlap because - well I always do! Just preference. I love an 847 more than any other. Thinner, yes, but more in sync with a humbucker voicing.

A muff would not normally be my first or even second choice, but I think it compliments your brighter pickups and bright / high headroom amp, especially in situations where you can't dime that amp and a touch of fuzz is still too buzzy. I'll be honest though, in that I do have reservations about a scooped amp and a scooped pedal (Muff) circuit together. That's where I'm hoping the Lester and driving the piss out of your power tubes and speakers will fill in the mids.

If you think you can get along without "that" Muff aspect (which really diversifies your voicings in this rig), swap it out for the Retrovibe. If you could get by with just the amp, the fuzz, and the Bluesbreaker for your gain structure, I imagine you will appreciate the option of a chorus/flange for a little tasteful liquidy lushness.

So running it through a Mesa or Marshall you'd lose one of the fuzzes and add some verb? No OD? Or something completely different for them? :hmm:

All I can tell you with my experience with those pedals is I'd take the Marshall BBII over the TS808.

I might swap the ODs with another amp but I would not add a reverb pedal. I dislike the sound/feel of "before amp reverb", personally. I like a little hair on the amp, even when clean, and reverb before dirt or compression just sounds wooshy and muddy. I'd rather have the reverb on the mic/PA or use the room acoustics.

Where did it say it had to be verb in front of the amp and not in a loop?

Reverb in a loop is still in front of the amp. Just not in front of the preamp. It's still in front of the PI, the power tubes, the OT, the speaker, and the cab.

It's only my preference, of course. No rules.

I know, I know... "room acoustics" was taking it too far. I might as well have said something about tone being in the fingers. :D

I generally keep the verb in the loop for non-reverb amps, its not perfect but its the best option (unless you have a stadium to play in). I went with the Blackstar HT1-R just for the on-board reverb.

Haven't tried the DD-7 in the loop, but it makes sense and I will definitely give it a go.

For 20+ years my only pedals were the big muff and a small stone (which I haven't even seen for the past 5 years or so... no idea where it wandered off to.)

Its amazing how you can get set in your ways to the extent of ignoring obvious options. That is what I'm attempting to do here, try things and combos I haven't thought of, or wrote off at one point or another, seeing if I can find something cool and unique that works.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Appreciate it immensely!! :thumb:

Actually, for me it's post output phase, as I run my loop off of my unleash, and everything through it.

But so is every reverb tank, and built-in difital reverb, aka post preamp or PI.

Hard to get certain genres without it though.

Little hard to achieve that 'surf' tone with room acoustics.

If I could choose a sixth pedal, I would add the Montreux Retrovibe Flanger/Chorus after the Fuzz. Actually, were it me and not you, I'd drop the Wah for this pedal as I don't play lead.
