i wondered 2 things after i watched late 50's ~ early 60's PAFs.
want to hear MLP expert opinions.

1. some of (not all) PAFs have very sloppy pole piece holes.
the PAFs show the bobbin color 'cause holes are large (or not properly covered or the pole pieces are small...)

might these kind of slopy holes represent they are original or vice versa.

2. some of (also not all) PAFs show a unique pattern on the base plate area.
especially the area between the two legs.

Larger pole piece holes in the cover are caused by the buffing process prior to plating. If the buffer is chasing flaws out of the cover he can end up enlarging the holes.

Two sets of tooling were used for covers and baseplates for PAF's.

Yes, I see them now. Don't know what the marks mean, though.

Interesting. When I do a string change, I'll have to look at the bottom of mine.

It has nothing to do with pole spacing or cover spacing. Bobbins shrink over time they will actually bow inward. This will create the effect of the poles not lining up with the cover. I've seen it on every PAF set I've ever owned. If a set of PAF's aren't shrunk a little they aren't real. Period...

That middle wide line is widespread and is another good way to confirm authenticity!
