i hate these threads but here i am.

Lady had no idea what she had untill i told her. A 1989 Gibson les paul Jr (she thought it was a 1954.....) Wanted/wants $1000.

Non original case, some unknown humbucker routed in. No original p90 to be found. Supposedly near mint damage wise. Has no real info on it other then "owning it forever"

I offered her $550 said she will get back to me. What say ye?

I think you made a good offer.

It'll be interesting to see what the experts say...

It seems that the asking price on an '89 is anywhere from $1000 - 1800. That one needs a dog ear P-90 replacement and hopefully the cover hides the rout. $550 seems fair to me, as I think $1000 is really all it's worth if it was unmolested.

As long as you're good with a Junior with a TOM instead of a wrap tail ;)

Looking at reverb stock unmolested 89s go for $1k or so.

I would bet a dogear cover will NOT hide the route/screw holes of the bucker ring. Then i have to buy a good pup. $100 to 150ish. Aftermarket case....

I dont mind the TOM exactly kinda nifty. I bought a new 2020 Jr that i love but just looking at options. 31 year old wood would be sweet lol

Personally, I don’t consider it a proper Junior if it doesn’t have a P90 and a wraptail. And just because it’s from 1989 doesn’t make it good. You’re so much better off with that 2020.

i can totally see someone paying $800+ for that, when you consider what that same amount could get you in other LPs. Those extra screws are no worse than ones left from a PG imo. Throw a cover on the HB and only forum nerds like us would even notice

it would depend on how if felt/played and what the HB is, but i'd try to rock the sh*t out of it

your offer was fair, depending how you swing it, non wraptail, routed, modified, non original case, no original p/u, etc...

I'd never pay that much for that guitar.

I bought my unmolested '01 Gibson LP Jr. for $400 out the door.

It does have the dog ear P-90 and wrap around bridge, and it sounds and plays amazing.

To me the guitar above doesn't qualify as a jr. to me.

It doesn't mean it couldn't be a great guitar in its own right, but I wouldn't look at it as a Jr. in its present configuration.

Here's my take:
(1) Humbucker in a JR - bad
(2) stop bar and ABR bridge in a JR - bad
(3) zero vintage value - bad
(4) modified pickguard - bad
(5) $550 - good

If you were not going to make a single mod, you could buy it, play it, enjoy it or sell it. Eventually you are going to want a "real" JR. Or you could go the full reverse-mod effort on this one. It's doable:
(1) fill the pickup rout and re-rout for dogear P90
(2) fill the holes for the stop bar and ABR bridge
(3) drill and install a quality wrap-around/wrap-tail bridge
(4) call Tony at Pickguardian.com and order a correct pick guard
(5) Refinish the guitar in something opaque to hide all the routing efforts

Thanks all. I assume she wont accept the $550 she seems in denial of its value. If i got it id see what the humbucker was and possibly keep it, heck maybe a ttop? Who knows when it went in or where it came from. I assume a SD of some sort.

Shes going to sit on it awhile for sure. $550 is TOPS id pay.

I just sold my 1986 today for 900. It sold in 1 hour. Very good shape. Has the original P90 in the case. Put a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop Greenie Humbucker under the P90 cover - that way it looks original and no extra holes.

Just took delivery on a new Lukas Nelson Junior. VERY impressed with this one - but can only keep one at a time. Will post a NGD soon.

Drilling a humbucker into the guitar hurts the price. Which is why I loved the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop "Humbucker Under P90 Cover" pickup. MJ built that, it sounded wonderful and you don't lose the P90 look in the process. I'd purchase a late 80s Junior again, but this time in Sunburst.

I think your offer is right on. I wouldn't go a penny higher unless that specific configuration and mod is exactly what you want.
