Im going to play it before I buy it thats for sure. I've been playing for 34 years, but I have only been into Lp's for the last 6 years or so. I'm looking for something a little more on the vintage side and there's no way I can afford something from the 50's or 60's. And Lp's do vary. I had a studio and it was terrible.

But the Norlin will change that.

I agree. I love my 79 & 80 more than the 01 & 05. They just feel right and sound EXCELLENT. I will also agree that they are heavier than the newer LPs but that's not an issue for me.

I've spent a lifetime playing a 76 Explorer so the older LP's don't feel much different....maybe that's why I like Norlins so much. They seem so familiar even though I had never owned a Les Paul until 2011.

Thanks for all the feedback. So it's down to the 1980 Lp custom 3 pickup or, a 2004 black Lp custom. I'm checking both out tomorrow. I'm thinking I'll go with the former.

Hi

I've got a LPC from 1980. I like the sound, the ebony fretboard, the look and the feel, because it was played for 30 years.
2 dislikes: it is a bit heavy, but still in a reasonable way. second, the frets are terrible, cause they are too flat for me (>fretless wonder)

I'd go for the old one, I love mine...

Hope that helps

Yours doesn't have fretless wonders. The problem is that she needs a pro refret.

WELL???!!!

So did you get a chance to play them? I would say the late 70's early 80's necks can be all over the map as far as size goes. Guitar manufacturing is more precise now a days. so neck feel from one to another is pretty standardized. Yes, there can be dogs in every era, that is for sure. If the Norlin feels good and speaks to you, then that's the one! Don't worry about the details (ex. maple neck). My '79 Custom is still my go to guitar. If you chose the newer LPC, let us know why. What was your deciding factors?

Thanks

I have a chance to purchase a 1980 Les Paul Custom 3 pickup for 1,900.00 buc's. First, should I buy it? Two, is it worth the price? I've heard all the pro's & con's on the Norlin years topic on this forum. But I've always wanted a 3 pickup Lp Custom & the price is right for me. Or should I buy a 2011 Lp Classic Custom baked maple neck? I'm torn. I know the later Norlin years improved but how are the 1980 models?

Then why would you debate whether you should buy a non-custom guitar instead? :hmm:

Ok, I checked out the 1980 Lp custom 3 pick up in person. It had a few issues. The clear was gone off the back of the guitar. The clear was gone of the back of the neck, and repainted, the paint was rubbing of the neck and you could see grey primer underneath. Some of the yellowing on the binding was cleaned off in some places, and the binding was painted over in some spots. Plus it wasn't all original. A seymour duncan was put in the middle position and the tuners were grovers put were not original to the guitar. He wanted 1900 and I would only pay no more than 1400. So I passed. I ended up getting a 2004 Custom shop Lp custom, black, great condition, original case and candy & paper work for 1875. The guy needed money and I lucked out. thanks for everyones input.

I'd buy the three pickup Custom in a heartbeat. If you don't buy it, let us know where it's at so one of us can pick it up!

Well it's for sale again. I don't know where your located but it's on craigslst. It's in San Francisco and he wants 2000. It's a 1980. There is another one on there to, a 1979 Lp custom sunburst for 1500, also a 3 pickup.

GET THE '79 SILVERBURST!!!

The only thing cooler than a custom is a three pup custom.

And the other one is also a good price, but 1500 is crazy good, even if it has a headstock repair, it's a great price.
