Hi!
What color is my 1980 Custom? Never seen it anywhere.
Oxblood and wine red are options, but all of the ones I have seen has had a "see-through" look where you can see the wood.
There in none of that here, the paint is much, much thicker. Had a fire engine red once where the paint was just as thick, but that is also not the color here. It is quite a bit darker than the picture as well. Anyone? Thanx.

Did you check all cavities for signs it might be a re-finish?
if it is factory, it is Cherry.
There was one only called Cherry? Cherry Sunburst it is clearly not

Actually orangeman has a good idea ... even if it is not a refin Hardcore has shown examples in the past where color codes were written under the pickups. The one you show would say something like HCSB for heritage cherry sunburst for example.

I've had the pleasure of working with HCT for a few years now. He is a Norlin affectionado.

If he says its cherry, it probably is.

Remember that the Norlin era was a time when just about anything was going on at Gibson.

Lots of custom colors and models were made back then.

:welcome:

I had one exactly like that(in fact that may be it). It was the heaviest LP I ever owned or played.

Looks wine red to me. Too light of a red color to be oxblood.

my '80 Standard has the finish stamped in one of the pickup cavities. I forget which one and apparently teh Bukkit has gone fuckko-bazoo so I can't look at the pics.

Thanx guys, for taking the time to help me out!

Cavity search concluded, no help there I'm afraid. Pictures below. Also some additional ones of the finish.
Since I'm considering selling it, I just wondered if it is kind of rare. Have been bying and selling vintage Gibsons for 25 years, and this is the only one I've seen with this particular finish. Cant find any pictures of a similar one. So what do you think? All the best, Ole.

I am on my phone but looks like an older Refinish.

regardless nothing “rare” about it, they made thousands.
If it’s a factory finish, I would consider it «rare», since I have not seen another one look like this. Tons of black, cherry sunburst etc around..

Considering the crazy checking. I’d say an old refinish.
I’ve never seen a Norlin nitro finish check like that.

I have seen plenty of Norlin era nitro finishes check like that…

I have also seen many In a solid cherry finish… Maybe not as much as the others, but there were a lot.
