No gold speed knobs - not worth $295,000

If the situation was reversed, most '58s, '59s and '60s being black and you'd come
across a Honeyburst somewhat flamed finish, I think that would be worth a big prime.
But since it's the actual look of the wood that is one of the big points of interest in Bursts,
not seeing the wood and not being able to tell how it is without removing the original finish
is a "catch 22" driving the price down in the end.

The sheer rarity of finish vs the hiding of the top doesn't amount to a bigger value in my book.
But hey, my book is so thin, what do I know?

Very sweet with the rosy binding bleed and flame coming through. Looks like a BBQ top to me.
Why would it take Gibson 3 months to paint over a burst is the other question.

Careful, your age is showing.

Back then, nothing happened quick. The order may have been sent through a rep, or sent through the mail.

Long distance calls were expensive! In fact, just the decade before this, you had to place an ORDER for a long distance call and schedule a time when all of the operators could manually make the connections.

I'm not sure most of the interstates were even finished...

FYI, the ONLY reason that would prevent me (money aside) from going after that guitar is...it's TOO clean. You can't play it. Bummer. :(

Looks like to me the bridge may be caved if you look carefully....See, not perfect. Sell the house and enjoy playing it!!:thumb:

Yep, you can definitely see the flame ripples in the black paint. I'll bet it has a spectacularly figured top. Too bad it's painted black.

THis guitar is a weird combination...all of the "Holy Grail" attributes in regards to tone/playability.

Some may decry the black paint obscuring what is likely a killer flamed-maple top, but then again? You're not wasting time oogling the top like a batch of long-lost Bettie Page nude shots, and focusing more on playing the damned thing(yes, I like oogling just as much as the next guy).

BUT, due to the beyond-rare status, you're afraid to so much as LOOK at it too hard lest the paint be damaged, much less plugging in and cranking away . Quite the conundrum.

I personally would play it. Carefully, but I'd crank that bitch up!
