Physical time travel is not possible. In other words; There is no physical way to travel backwards in time and see yourself as a child, because theoretically, you wouldn't even exist. The same thing applies to forward time travel; You wouldn't be able to see yourself as an old man, because you can only exist in one time, so if you were able to travel to the future, everyone that was your age would have aged, but you would still be the age you were when you left.:thumb:

a lot of theories here...I agree with the non linear aspect whole heartedly.

I do believe anyone that says "can't" or "impossible" hasn't learned that our existance has seemingly limitless potential for the impossible

Here's one way to shoot down the time traveler prohibitive rules: infinite dimensions, therefore infinite timelines. This can explain the paradox of destiny vs. free will. The answer is both are true, and can be true with infinite dimensions.

As for the video, is that real? Pretty wild if so

Theoretically, anything you do will have already been done. There can be no paradox because if you existed to travel back in time then the things you did were already done.
Yep. Without getting into dimensional theory and showing myself as the nerd I am, if you did travel back in time and kill your own father, you'd simply create a different branch in the time line, but it wouldn't make a lick of a difference to any one other than yourself, because you'd be the only one who knew.

There's nothing new under the sun.:thumb:

People think that planes (and helicopters for that matter) were invented by the Wright bros, but it was in fact Leonardo Da Vinci came up with the idea. The only thing that modern man is responsible for, is creating the technology that enabled them to become a reality a reality.:thumb:
You can go back even further. There were maps available in the time before we knew the world was round that show exactly what the land mass UNDER the ice of Antarctica looks like. We *current man* weren't able to view the land under the ice until the invention of radar and satellite imaging.

Wanna know what I believe? Call me crazy if you want, but I believe that we are not at the pinnacle of our civilization... That mankind as a species has been as advanced technologically, or more so and something epic happened to blast us back to the stone age. Be it asteroid or massive virus, or even an insane nuclear war... But I don't think this is the first time we've come this 'far'.

Either that or the planet we originally lived on was ruined or destroyed by our actions and we are the offspring of the survivors who came here to start over.

People can feel free to disagree with me, but since nobody has facts to the contrary, don't tell me I'm wrong.

The Holographic Universe - Crystalinks

;)

Nothing is impossible. It's just a matter of time. Look at it this way... Science has done some crazy things recently. It has transported matter from one location to another, it has entangled particles and used them to send information INSTANTLY from one to another regardless of distance, and with a great enough distance, the information travels faster than the speed of light *which every one knows is impossible, right?*. Science has discovered more planets in our solar system when before we were so sure we'd be alone in the universe because we'd never even seen an extrasolar planet before, and now we find them daily, putting more doubts in our 'universe revolves around us' theory.

I could go on... Just in the last month there have been discoveries that have blown away old impossibilities and 'can nots'. ;)

Going back to the original clip, that woman looks suspiciously like Mrs Tachyon from Johnny and the Bomb, T. Pratchett, except she had hidden her supermarket trolley somewhere. Watch out for the cat.

BTW a great time travel book is Up the Line by Robert Silverberg.

It's a bloody hearing aid for Pete's sake. She's talking, adjust the volume just so she can hear herself. :D

It really does look like she's talking on a cell phone and yes, I too got the creeps a little.

Classic case of "seeing what you want to see"...

It was a Charlie Chaplin film...for all we know it was a telephone receiver, and he wanted it to look like she was a crazy woman talking on a disconnected phone.

But time travel is the most logical answer...:laugh2:

Seems to me that she's using the brand spanking new iphone 2000 from the year 7245 and testing out the app that it came with!! Also piggybacking on the "Disguise me for the year I'm traveling to so that I don't look like I'm a time traveler." :thumb:

Just my take fellas.

I read this book quite recently:

It examines scientific and science fiction ideas that are currently thought of as impossible and evaluates whether they really are impossible (i.e. they break the laws of physics as we currently understand them) or whether we just haven't figured out how to do them yet.

Time travel falls into the second category; it is theoretically possible, but would take such collosal amounts of energy that it is practically unworkable right now.

However, I would have thought that when (if) we ever figure out how to solve these energy requirements we will have moved well past the hand held mobile phone.

I hope she brought some GSM base stations with her on the time machine.

Either that or she talked to her husband that walked in front of her while scratching her noggin.

Ockham is spinning in his grave.

If she is a time traveler and her mobile phone is roaming to 60+ years in the future she's gonna have one hell of a phone bill!!!!

I thought it could have been a little transistor radio but our friend Wiki tells me they weren't produced until 1950ish.

Another thought crossed my mind, it's a 1928 version of Morpheus (from The Matrix) and he's just calling the Nebakanezer to find an exit.

Ahhh, but there is one small problem with your theory. We can find remains of dinosaurs (160 million years ago), early man (4 million years ago), etc, but we HAVE NEVER found remains of an extremely advanced technological civilization. How can that be?

A proposed solution: there was once a planet just beyond Mars. It destroyed itself and is now known as the "asteroid belt". A few straggling remnants escaped to Earth to start again amongst the nascent human populaiton.

I once drafted a short story involving time travel as tourism. The most popular destination was a Zeppelin concert in Denmark in '71.

Just sayin.....

Well, they've found bits and pieces of unexplainable things, but no evidence. Carbon dating is ultimately flawed though... I'm not sure I buy the 100's of millions of years ago stuff... Hopefully they keep finding cool stuff though!

Just a few more notes about this video...

It wasn't a scene from the movie. It was a camera filming outside the theatre before the premiere of the film.

What it looks like to me is she is hiding her face because she doesn't want to be on film *embarrassment, my mom does this when the camera is on her* and she's calling out to the man ahead of her who is walking really fast to slow down.

The whole 'woman in drag' thing is a joke. She's wearing big shoes, and that's the only thing overly 'butch' about her.

Also, it's not a hearing device, if she's holding anything at all. You can google all hearing devices from that time frame and they all had separate parts with cords/wires running from them to a massive 3volt battery.

Also... To those who said 'it can't be a cell phone, there were no towers or satellites back then!' should really rethink the ridiculousness of all of those words, in this context.

If they can travel through TIME I'm pretty sure using a handset of some kind to speak through time is within their grasp. Also, just saying that is admitting there may be a possibility of time travel in the future, but that cell phones or communication will remain the same as it is now...

Finding stuff like what? The Baghdad battery kind of stuff? Come on man, even if it was a power supply, it's stone age technology.

Carbon Dating is "ultimately flawed"? How so? The chemistry/physics of carbon dating are irrefutable.

Care to expand on your issues with "100's of millions of years ago stuff"?

I think you've been watching too many episodes of "Ancient Aliens" and "The 700 Club".
