The Boston Red Sox defeated the Brooklyn "Superbas"/"Robins"/"Trolley Dodgers" (all unofficial nicknames) in the World Series. But what was notable was the dominant complete-game pitching performance in Game 2, with a Game Score of 98 the best performance by a starting pitcher in World Series history: 14 innings, 3 walks, 6 hits, 1 run, 4 strikeouts.
His name? Ruth.
Had the Yankees not moved him to right field, Babe Ruth would still be in the Hall of Fame as a pitcher. He wasn't just good, he was awesome; Game 2 in 1916 began a streak of 29-2/3 scoreless WS innings, a mark not touched until Whitey Ford. His 9 shutouts in 1916 was a record that stood until 1978. Oh, and there was the 1.75 ERA in 1918; his CAREER ERA was 2.27 (the same as Mariano Rivera, a freakin' closer...)
Incidentally, Brooklyn's Sherry Smith also went the distance, and his Game Score of 82 provides a total for both pitchers of 179, the highest in postseason history.
