Hi!

Just got an 2009 Les Paul Junior in Satin White

Someone has taken away the finish, due to a neck break it suffered, I’m looking to refinish a small section around the damage.

Looking at nitro finishes and colour wise I’ve narrowed it down to a White Blonde

https://www.northwestguitars.co.uk/white-blonde-nitrocellulose-guitar-paint-lacquer-aerosol-400ml/

My question is, for the top coat do I go for a clear gloss or clear satin finish?

Across the whole guitar there is a slight shine to the top coat, just looking for the closest possibly solution.

Thanks!

Back of the neck is different... or not!

Some like their neck more like satin because it doesn't stick as much.
I've sanded some necks lightly with .000 (or .0000 ? I don't remember!
But I got a bunch of it somewhere... lol) steel wool to get rid of the
Nitrocellulose sticky when new feel.

Many of those satin finish models have no topcoat or grain filler and the finish is very fragile. Your repair will probably not match and will wear at a different rate. I would leave it alone, it doesn’t look that bad anyway. Those cracks look more like damage to the finish, Gibson necks don’t usually break there.

Added a few more pictures below. Asked prior to buying it if the damage on the reply above was a neck crack, they said no, it arrived with what is clearly a crack (seen on both sides) the wear on the back doesn’t bother me, however the finish and cracks on the sides does

Thanks! Yeah I prefer a more satin feeling neck, there isn’t much gloss on this guitar possibly just the finish itself with no top coat, there’s a slight shine to it

That type of finish is horrible. They wear down to the wood in months.

Personally, I would refinish that whole area. It is very hard to duplicate some of the new stain finishes that are shot over an unfilled body, because it's a crap finish to begin with, and wears in a truly ugly way that exposes the cruddy nature of the finish. No one can tell from pictures what the overall surface of the guitar is like, but my best guess would be to sand back the whole area -- perhaps even the entire back of the neck -- and shoot the best-match color you can acquire and then clear coat this with either standard gloss nitro and sand it dull-ish, or satin clear. Since I will never under any circumstances spray satin on a guitar, I would opt for gloss clear, sanded and rubbed back to a low luster and excellent smoothness. A neck shape offers easy possibilities for blending the new finish into the old. I assume all those cracks are stable. If not, you need to do that tricky work before finishing. Good luck. Somebody really whacked that guitar.

I'd show that to a competent luthier.
Looks like it might be cracked all the way through.
Hopefully not but have it checked.

Sanded it back, it’s just at the sides the back is completely fine, just needs the refinish

What I meant is it could be a crack that goes from one side to the other "inside"
the neck. It doesn't have to show on the back of the neck to be through.

Ah I get you! There looked to be titebond or some form of glue seepage coming out of both sides so I imagine it’s been glued correctly, previous owner said luthier had reglued and stress tested it, no movement since I’ve owned it so I assume it’s okay..

OK, I'm reassured!
