I'd try the R9 first and hope that it is a perfect match. Why not wish for easy? Trying before buying is always ideal. I'd focus on the fundamentals for me which would be Tone, Neck Carve and Appearance. If the 2007 felt good in my hands and had the voice, it would not be too difficult to address the pots, bridge and nut.

I'd love to find a local gem.
Yeah, finding a local gem is hard to beat. I found my '99 R9 40th Anniversary that way. It was sitting on consignment at a local shop and already had a set of Holmes PUs installed. I was able to trade in some unused gear on the deal.

I'd try to get the R9 down a little bit, but even at that price, it's my choice.

2007 R9...because rumours have it that Gibson had a stash of and used True (it's that word again) Honduran Mahogany (i.e. sourced from Honduras; not the Fiji-grown Swietenia macrophylla) that year...

Just repeating the rumour...Don't know if any of it is true but makes interesting speculating.

I'll still take the 2007 R9 because it might hold its value a little better. A $3500 2014 R8 today is a <$3000 R8 tomorrow. A $3500 2007 R9 today is likely to remain a $3500 R9 tomorrow.

They likely both are quite good in every way, with slight difference in tone.
I have had 10+ historics from various years including '13 and '14.

The R8 neck might be beefier if that matters.
The R9 will hold value better at those price points as you are getting it used at decent price.
I never buy new.
