    Is My Pickup Microphonic?

I bet for a thin or broken junction somewhere acting like a series capacitor and adding to the mag transducer the behavior of a condenser mic... Anyway I'd start by reflowing the solder on the "hot" side, on the ground side AND between the coils, at the output of the 4 conductors cables (where...

DO YOU KNOW THIS p90 ??

Yep, that's what I have currently in a Hamer. it requires two pickups with the same winding direction / polarity, though, and it's not noiseless in mid position. A crude small dummy coil (like a P90 without its magnets and metallic parts) also affects the sound more than a large air coil: the...

DO YOU KNOW THIS p90 ??

Yep, large air coils in the Ilitch fashion require much work for an uncertain result. Now, my home made experimental guitar with swappable PU's hosts such a DYI large air coil right now and it makes the "hot" bridge single coil dead silent. Simple(r) dummy coils don't require much work...

IR loader pedal ideas.... please help!!

As a foonote to my previous answer, I share below the frequency response of my own IR's, done with the Nux Solid Studio capturing several of my own cabs through a SM57... i've just used an ultra linear amp set absolutely flat to power the cabs... I think that any kind of "hi-fi" solid state amp...

Is this enough?... please let me know.

it's one more reason to "capture" the sound of this loudspeaker with the Nux Solid Studio. i've done it with 5 or 6 different loudspeakers among my own gear so it appears to be doable... :)

Is this enough?... please let me know.

Why didn't you use a dirty tone for this test ? Clean tones are always good or acceptable, even from a guitar plugged direct to the board, IME/IMHO/AFAIK. That's only with gain and distortion that fizzyness comes and justifies the presence of a cab as a tone filter... INDIFFERENT PARENTHESIS...

IR loader pedal ideas.... please help!!

I'd recommend Nux solid Studio for various reasons: 1) it allows to capture the sound of your loudspeaker(s) or even the power amp + cab and sounds realistic. it"s a kind of simplified Kemper, if you will... 2) it has an ultra low latency, that my Joyo Cab Box has not; 3) it has a true...

DO YOU KNOW THIS p90 ??

Hello again, There's already many info in the page about Blueshawk guitars mentioned in my previous post. I've also contributed to this topic recently: https://www.mylespaul.com/threads/dummy-coils-theory-help-then-maybe-application.455538/ Now and to keep it simple: if you want the simplest...

Why do so many people hate on the 496r/500t?

Two observations here... 496R might tend to sound muddy in 22 frets guitars but do a good job in 24 frets ones. 500T can give excellent results once associated to some creative wiring... I've recently paired one with a custom home made humbucking inductive filter and it sounds more than good...

DO YOU KNOW THIS p90 ??

Hello, Like ARandall, I wouldn't expect less noise with a "real" P90: I'd even say that, as big bar mags + screw poles + keeper bars rise the inductance, the hum risks to get worse. If noise is annoying and if you want to keep the look of a P90's, there's various noiseless models able to do...

    Dimarzio's defending their double cream

But this victory in court is not necessarily a victory in the heart of customers... ... and it brings back old stories whose knowledge might disgust a couple of potential users. I'll quote what Wolfe had the kindness to recall for me some years ago ...

    Installed a 500T and...

Measurements done here state a DCR of 15.45k and an inductance of 7.77H. But my archives also mention 14.6k and 8.6H for an older model. i've Gauss measurements somewhere... with their 3 ceramic bars, these things exhibit a strong magnetic field.

    DeArmond foils-type tone?

From cheap to boutique brands, various PU's released these last years look like DeArmond's and are supposed to sound like them. I'm really not sure they have all the same inner structure and components than original ones... IME and AFAIK, real Rowe / DeArmond's "foil" PU's were/are cheap...

Might be "double tones". Do a Google search with these words or, to keep it short, just listen the first notes here: And anyway, enjoy with your future JB's...

Dummy Coils - Theory help (then maybe application)

Delayed answer (been too busy the past days). If you use rare Earth mags instead of AlNico bars in a P90, you might have to pull off the "keeper bar" below the coil and to shorten the screw poles by cutting them. Reasons: -the probable north / south polarization of such mags is not meant to...

Dummy Coils - Theory help (then maybe application)

Hello, In my test, the position of the guitar relatively to the "noise source" (a lamp next to a computer screen) was strictly the same. I've changed ONLY the position of the dummy coil in the guitar or next to it. That said: yes, of course, we can tame the hum by giving a different position /...

Dummy Coils - Theory help (then maybe application)

Lester, I've omitted to add graphic separators between parts but all are there. The dummy coil just makes very little to no difference when it's not oriented properly (or increases the noise when flipped upside down). Roger66, -The second trace is with the dummy coil inside the shielded cavity...

Dummy Coils - Theory help (then maybe application)

Lester, I haven't replied immediately to your questions 'cause I wanted to do a funny il' test for ya. Not that I've too much free time but it took me only five minutes this evening.... Below is the trace of a recording involving my Hamer with P90's, through a Tube Screamer feeding a tube...

Dummy Coils - Theory help (then maybe application)

    1) A dummy coil with regular specs (like a pickup without mag(s)) has indeed a negative impact on tone. But it can be compensated. For instance, the pickups of the Blueshawk were not normal P90's. they were P90's with AlNiCo rods, giving them a lower inductance and more "touch sensitivity" thx...

Dummy Coils - Theory help (then maybe application)

For the record, a (series) dummy coil will also lower the output level a bit, because it doesn't add only "useless inductance" but also useless resistance - if it's a standard dummy coil with the same specs than a regular PU, of course. Also: I've used old pickups as dummy coils and/or wound my...
