Appeal of ABR-1 vs. Nashville style bridges (and vice versa)

An unwound string is, technically speaking, a metal rod. Unwound strings have more inharmonicity than wound ones. So, the shorter the string the more inharmonicity (you basically shorten the string when fretting, but you do not change its diameter). The downside of a wound G is (as already...

Appeal of ABR-1 vs. Nashville style bridges (and vice versa)

Nice and thorough description. One small correction, though. I believe the ABR is cast metal, not milled, correct?

    The Norlin Threat

I definitely would not mind having one of those. Too bad so many of them were ruined by conversion to full size humbuckers.

Can’t Be Real - Something Fishy Going On

Couldn't you find a friendlier way to ask your question? Especially since you don't seem to know what you are talking about. I don't have time to engage in pissing contests of any battle of wits. I do want to answer the question. So, let's get to it. The True Gibson headstock logo is slanted...

Can’t Be Real - Something Fishy Going On

The headstock logo is tilted. It's amazing how someone is competent enough to make an entire guitar but not competent enough to get that logo right. You can literally download the logo size an placement from millions of web site at this time. The body outline also doesn't feel right.

Dot over ”i” on Gibson logo

Absolutely. The old silkscreen logo has the dot attached. And the new silkscreen logo has a detached dot, which is much nicer in appearance. As a Gibson fan, I like when the Gibson logo looks nice and it always bothered me to see the attached dot, which is not aligned with the letter "i". A...

Dot over ”i” on Gibson logo

That's what I thought. So, why they made that dot touch the G? It would have made sense if it was a decal without any added border around the gold, but a silkscreen can be made the same if the dot is detached.

Is “tune once and done” a myth?

Did you know that a tuning fork does not stay perfectly in tune? Here we don't have to define what it means to be "in tune" like we might actually need to agree on a definition for a guitar. An A-440 tuning fork should vibrate at 440 Hz, but does it always? The resonant frequency of a tuning...

Dot over ”i” on Gibson logo

A side question, if you guys don't mind... I was always wondering why Gibson designed the silkscreen logo with the dot touching the G, as they've used for decades of lesser expensive models. Or is that logo not a silkscreen, perhaps?

Repair of a botched headstock repair

Thank you all for your comments. I guess I'll just document both projects and post the progress here. It will take me a while as I have day to day priorities to work on.

Repair of a botched headstock repair

OK, I made some progress on this project. So, since I've never removed a Gibson headstock overlay before, I am feeling a bit uneasy about the idea of doing the removal for the first time on a customer's guitar. Fortunately, I have an unusual situation. Months ago another customer abandoned a...

Would You Enter This Gibson Giveaway?

Apart from the case, this is more like a Gibson throwaway, not so much a giveaway.

Repair of a botched headstock repair

Oh, I hope I didn't give the wrong impression. I don't feel frustrated about this job. I am just considering all the options and trying to make the best decision, for me and for my customer. This is a no rush job. Customer said so and I also have quite a few day-to-day jobs on my bench. I...

    Gibson or another Epiphone?

I guess I'm with you on this one. I never thought it made much sense to buy an Epiphone, if the objective was to have a guitar I'd really feel excited about owning and playing. I was never rolling in dough, but I always found a way to buy a Gibson and not look at Epiphones. One can spend...

    Gibson or another Epiphone?

Regarding QC issues, it really depends on the issues and what issues you can deal with (or eliminate after you get the guitar). I recently bought an ES-335 but had to go through a few before settling on which one to buy. There were just silly things that should never have come out of the...

Repair of a botched headstock repair

This is it. Do you think I need to glue the crack, temporarily, so that I have a solid surface for removal? If, so, what kind of adhesive should be used? OK, so the palette knife should just be driven in parallel to the surface, I guess like feeding a workpiece through a band saw, meaning...

Repair of a botched headstock repair

Considering all the options discussed here I think the best option is still the first one discussed here - the scarf sandwich. I am even thinking of replacing the two side wings, after the scarf joint. It would make for a neater repair, showing the grain on the side of the headstock. Since...

Repair of a botched headstock repair

First, thank you all for sharing your thoughts. You're 100% right about this. I'll go ahead and buy a fly cutter, as it's a tool I'll need anyway. It depends on the work pieces. I would say this is higher intermediate to advanced woodworking. I have to prepare 4 scarf joint surfaces. One of...

Repair of a botched headstock repair

OK, there's been some development. The client approved $600 and I'll also do some extra work on the frets, new nut, and of course setup. Here are some photos after hardware removal. The paint will obviously have to be scraped, so I started doing that. After scraping the pain we can see the...

Repair of a botched headstock repair

I know this is off topic, but since we're talking about the safe-t-planer... The reason I bought it in the first place was in big part because I still don't have a fly cutter and I had a job that could use one. In fact, the safe-t-planner seemed like the better option because of the way it...
