    Classic vs. Standard 60s!

OP, if all you care about is the bridge pickup, then why do you want a 2-pickup guitar? Are you planning to ignore the neck pickup and never use it, or maybe even remove it entirely? Do you just want that classic Les Paul look? And that's a totally legit reason, in my opinion - guitars are...

New 1958 incoming, help with appearance

My take: Pickguard on, then go with double cream. Pickguard off, then go with black. I'm not a big fan of zebras on bursts for some reason, but I like zebras with other colors. Or you could keep it stock, it looks damn fine as is. :thumb: Congrats, and show us what you decide on!

A Slight Dilemma- Standard 50’s Search for Right One!

Did you ask your Sweetwater rep if there's any way they can keep an eye out for one that looks a lot like the one in that image? Not sure if they'd be willing to do that, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Second choice: I'm not a big fan of Guitar Center in general, but if I were in your situation...

Opportunity to buy back my old Les Paul... Thoughts.?

Ask yourself, what else could you buy with £3,500? If you find yourself daydreaming about other gear, then maybe you'll be happier spending your money that way. If your mind keeps going back to your old guitar, then you definitely should take the opportunity to buy it back (but personally, I'd...

    Help with colors and finishing

Sorry for being unresponsive lately, I haven't had a lot of time to spend on the forums. I sincerely appreciate everyone's responses, advice, and insights from their own experiences! Bleaching the walnut is something I had never considered. I still need to spend a lot more time looking into...

NGD and some questions, TRC and pickups...?

I could be mistaken, but I believe the TRC you have there is a gen-u-ine StewMac part :) The shape and bevel look spot on to me, right down to the chatter marks along the curves. As for what...

    Help with colors and finishing

Hmm... As I dive deeper down this rabbit hole, I'm already beginning to second-guess my choices... It seems that the general consensus for walnut is simply clear finish. I also had not previously considered this, but many woods including walnut typically will darken over time, and...

    Help with colors and finishing

Thank you all for your help, you've definitely give me some great advice and some things to think about. ARandall, thank you for the tips, and that video of Freddy G was immensely helpful! I remember seeing a video a few years ago of Tom Murphy showing how he sprays bursts, and from what I...

    Help with colors and finishing

Hi everyone, and thanks in advance for the assistance. I'm a complete novice when it comes to finishing guitars. I've started reading up on it and it's making my head spin a little - do I use dye or stain, wipe-on or spray, how to those choices affect the order of operations, etc. Trying to...

    Grovers on a 59RI

My vote, get Grover Milk Bottle Rotomatics. According to the specs, the posts are ever so slightly (like a mm or two) taller than regular Rotomatics, which ever so slightly alters the break angle of the strings behind the nut. To me, the strings feel just slightly slinkier and easier to bend...

Need help identifying LP model from movie, plz!

I just watched the scene on YouTube, and it looks like a couple of those Les Pauls in the window (including the one in question with the flower painted on it) have the oddly discolored inlays that early- to mid-2000's Les Paul Classics were known for. As for the painted flower, I agree that it...

What's the going rate for a near mint, original 1997 Classic

Great that you've had a chance to play before buying! It's not a fad, it's a preference. Slim necks work for you, that's great; the too-thin neck on my old Classic would always cause my hand to cramp, and I've never once had that problem with the fatter neck on my Traditional (granted, it's...

Inlay gaps - okay or need filling?

Thank you all for your replies, and for the consensus of using CA glue to fill. I'll probably give it a go in the near future. I appreciate your help! :thumb:

Inlay gaps - okay or need filling?

Hi everyone. My first post here in the Land of the Luthiers. :) I hope this post is appropriate for this forum; if not, I hope the mods will move it to the appropriate location. I recently acquired an awesome Gretsch G2657T (an excellent Les Paul-sized, overseas-made semi-hollow that won't...

What's the going rate for a near mint, original 1997 Classic

I had a 1995 Classic for many years, bought it brand new in '96. Took me a very long time to figure out that I like thicker necks, and of course my Classic was super slim. Necks on Classics are notoriously thin. A couple of years ago, I got a Traditional and sold my old Classic to Guitar...

I'm starting to get into Gretsch guitars, I wouldn't mind seeing those.

    Need help identifying 2 LPs

Hi, and welcome to the forum. :welcome: Sorry about your uncle's passing. :( The first one you posted, 90837485, appears to be a Gibson Les Paul Studio of some flavor. As you noted, it's difficult to tell without additional photos. I think most Studio models of that era had solid/single-color...

    Gallbladders are RUDE!

Congrats on the happy, healthy baby girl! :) Several years ago I passed a kidney stone that sent me to the hospital. Absolutely THE WORST physical pain I’ve ever experienced... Sharp stabbing pain with no end. It was absolutely debilitating, I was writhing on the floor and there was nothing...

I had a ‘95 LP Classic for many years, but I’ve heard that the newer Slim Taper necks aren’t as skinny as the old ones. Unfortunately, I haven’t had an opportunity to try one for myself just yet. Thanks for the info, and congrats again, that's a real beauty!!
