Pancakes were introduced by the end of '69. The latest '69 Deluxes have 3-piece necks, pancake bodies and medium-long tenon, then by the very latest months of the year a small neck volute appeared that became more prominent by 1970. The tenon also shortened to the medium style. The closed "B"...

Just one example from the countless similar descriptions about a '50s Les Paul:
"...has more natural resonance than any humbucker-equipped Les Paul I’ve played (...) Beneath the chimey, crisp treble, there’s a hollow woodiness that could fool you into thinking it’s a chambered body – if it...

A practical question: if one ships a very dark RW boarded guitar as ebony (stating on the shipping label), will the customs bother to check it with some special botanical equipment if it's really ebony or will they automatically let it pass through?
I might have to test the waters pretty soon...
So many scientists on a guitar forum!
It will be interesting to read threads like this in 50 years time, when science will finally catch up to what experienced musicians already know by their ears and brain (which is still pretty much undiscovered land in science).
Disproving common sense...
Thank you guys for your help and for the detailed tutorial! Maybe the checking in the nitro was caused because the guitar was shipped to me from a mediterranean country to the cold local winter.
I purchased this LP Standard recently and just noticed that it has an odd scratch/crack in the back of the headstock. It definitely doesn't look like a headstock crack to me, but I'm not a luthier.
It's very hard to notice in normal conditions, it's only visible from certain angles. Under...
There are 4 main tonal qualities of the best LPs: good sustain, clear & percussive low-end, meaty & blooming high notes, loud acoustic voice. Even with Historics you almost never get this 4 qualities at the same time. You can have a Historic with fantastic sustain and note bloom but with a...
There is worldwide misrepresenting of the so-called Livebuckers. Almost every store describes them as overwound Custom Buckers with the same Alnico 3 magnets. This is not true. I asked Gibson and they confirmed that the Livebuckers are made with Alnico 5's. So Livebuckers have not much...
