Recent 1983 acquisition (it's not a fake) progress report.

Been meaning to post a shot of my 1983. Had the re fret done and she turned out to be a really good buy for being 36. She's a keeper.

When exactly did Norlin era end?

My 83 does not have Schaller String Winder Tuners. Must've been exclusive to the custom. Very nice guitar by the way...

When exactly did Norlin era end?

I undrstand the much maligned Norlin era is one Gibson' darkest periods (expect maybe their latest financial woes..), but is everything produced then bad? My 1983 Gibson Les Paul Standard is truly fantastic,, maybe Norling was trying to redeem themselves? Seriously, I could not ask for a nicer...

White guard looks fine on my 1983 Standard in natural finish (similar to yours), just not on my 2018 in Orange Sunrise...

NGD: Canadian exclusive Les Paul Classic Player Plus Orange Sunrise

So after a day I've decided that the pickguard will remain off. I used Macronaut's suggestion, taped the guard on to see how it looks, starred at it for a while and really, nah...it looks better without....

    Your favorite "other" Gibson?

Oddly, my most expensive guitar a 2004 Gibson ES-175 is one I play the least these days. After my 83 Standard, 04 SG Standard, and recent (2018) P-90s Les Paul Classic (no particular order -these are all great). I'm blessed!!!

Gibson guitars with rounded 50's necks

The 2018 Les Paul Classic Player models (at least the P-90s classics) have a 50s rounded neck, these can still be had for less money as the clear out stock. Check online...Here's mine:

Let's see your early 80s Gibson Les Standards...

Here's my 1983 Standard in natural finish with Tim Shaws. Love this guitar all stock except for a refret (yeah, I lost my nibs).

I completed my creme conversion. Also added a "Classic" truss cover. I think it looks great. All reversible of course so can go back to black if I feel like it. :-) After setup and restring:

Recent 1983 acquisition (it's not a fake) progress report.

I just learned something. So 83 was a transition year?? I was wondering why it felt a tad lighter (9.26lbs )than my other LP which has no weigh relief (10.5lbs). Cool, thanks for the info.

NGD: 1980 Les Paul Pro (Ebony)

Wow, she's in really good shape. I used to own that exact model / year. Mine was more of a player with some belt rash and all, but loved the P-90s and it had a really nice neck (thought it was ebony?). Sold it and regretted that stupid decision ever since.

Recent 1983 acquisition (it's not a fake) progress report.

Thanks to the great advice from members here and on TDPRI I ended buying the 83 LP Standard. The pickups are indeed Tim Shaw so that was a pleasant discovery. It's going to my tech tonight for refret/dressing estimate. This week though I was able to install some new tuners (Gibson Deluxe vintage...

Possible 83 Les Paul Standard purchase, but is it a fake??

Too lazy to get my voltage meter out right now, but wondering how to tell visually if the PUs are TS? Here's the neck PU.

Possible 83 Les Paul Standard purchase, but is it a fake??

Got her cleaned up, put a tip switch on. She's looking good now. Tomorrow check the electronics again and take out the PUs and maybe I'll get lucky and they will turn out to be Tim Shaw? So it this considered a lemon burst with pin stripe or ribbon figure??

Possible 83 Les Paul Standard purchase, but is it a fake??

Well I ended up buying it. Got a great deal ($1200 CAD) as seller was motivated and agreed that a fret job is warranted. Thanks for all the "quick" info. I'll post about the pickups once I start cleaning her up and take a deep look at the electronics.
