    Les Paul Junior Rebuild

So I have managed to route out an plug two of the areas I planned to. The plugs could have been a bit better, particularly the one on the front but I pretty much flooded it with hide glue in the hope that when I sand it down it will leave a flat, solid surface in the gaps. Not the best, I know...

    Les Paul Junior Rebuild

Bit of an update - not much but all I managed to do today. After the router messed up and bit into the guitar I had to make the hole a big bigger. The router bit also kept dropping (turned out the router was a bit dodgy and was returned and replaced) so it’s also deeper than plan. But all in...

    Les Paul Junior Rebuild

So my wonderful girlfriend bought be a new router for Christmas as she didn’t manage to sort out my present before she moved back to Australia for a couple months. As such I have managed to begin more work on this poor guitar. So far I have routed to depth the back hole that I will be plugging...

    Les Paul Junior Rebuild

So I sanded the top and the back to get rid of some old lacquer. Trying to be a little bit careful to not add any massive dents so I get as good a finish as possible when this is done. You can clearly see how stupid I was with the filler. My only smart idea was to fill most of it with wood...

Gibson Les Paul Custom 'Refinish' + Modifications

Still waiting for a few bits to arrive but I have managed to wet sand and buff the guitar and now it is hanging on my wall waiting for it to be completed. Not too bad if I do say so myself. You can just make out the dent in the right light and you know where to look for it. And in very bright...

    Les Paul Junior Rebuild

A few more pictures after some very quick sanding to clean things up a bit. As you can see, as some point I’d routed the truss rod channel too deep and we had to fill it with some oak with had spare I think. Clearly over did it on the carving.

    Les Paul Junior Rebuild

So many years ago I build a Les Paul Junior DC with my Grandad and posted the build thread on here. Considering I was probably 17/18 years old at the time, I was fairly pleased with how it turned out. But as usually, a lack of knowledge, lack of money and an impatience to finish led to it being...

Gibson Les Paul Custom 'Refinish' + Modifications

So I have orders a bunch of parts that are on their way. Need to take some pictures of the buffed up finish as well. Ordered: Faber InSerts and ABR style Bridge Jame's Home Of Tone Wiring Kit Schaller Locking Tuners Dunlop Strap Locks And the biggest purchase - a set of OX4 57 Pickups which I...

Gibson Les Paul Custom 'Refinish' + Modifications

Yeah I thought about that. Considering some OX4 57s. Just need to find some reviews.

Gibson Les Paul Custom 'Refinish' + Modifications

Also whilst I’m at it. Considering the amount of spare time I have at the moment, I’m considering plugging the pickup routes myself. I can get a nice piece of maple that will be large enough/deep enough and I will have to shape with hand tools but regarding fitting. Will I need to sand off the...

Gibson Les Paul Custom 'Refinish' + Modifications

Sorry if I have misunderstood this but what do you mean by longer the wait time? I always understood it as once you’ve waited a suitable time you can work your way up the grits and then buff? Should I be waiting between grits?

Gibson Les Paul Custom 'Refinish' + Modifications

Okay. Was just wondering if it would be any less because it’s sprayed over an already finished nitro? So I shouldn’t think there should be my shrinkage?

Both I suppose? I always just work through the grits and then buff

Gibson Les Paul Custom 'Refinish' + Modifications

Quick question whilst I am at it. How long should I leave the lacquer before wet sanding? I know on a full respray the general consensus seems to be at least a week (according to manufacturer) but three weeks seems to be the norm. Do you think this applies to how I’ve done this guitar?

Gibson Les Paul Custom 'Refinish' + Modifications

Yeah was thinking that to be honest and if I am still off work by the time it is done I probably will do it. I enjoy it if I'm honest.

Gibson Les Paul Custom 'Refinish' + Modifications

I agree with you there. However, when I spoke to the luthier who was going to do the work, originally I was going to have the whole top refinished but the current situation and job insecurity means that the money I'd have to spend on that couldn't be justified. Further conversations led to me...

Gibson Les Paul Custom 'Refinish' + Modifications

This is how it looks after the black coats and a few coats of clear. I had to level the coats down to 400 grit a couple of times to even out the ridge left from using tape to mask off the rest of the guitar. Today I have been adding the last few coats before leaving it for a week. Now I need...
