Greco violin bass - fret question

I bought this bass as a project, and one of the things that needs attention is the frets. Although they look pretty grubby they’re actually not that worn. The thing is, the frets have been cut quite short, and don’t reach across the binding. The ends aren’t particularly smooth - I could...

    Replacing an SG fingerboard

I have a project SG which needs a new fingerboard, as the current one has really wide fret slots, and has been excessively rounded along the edges. I have bought a pre-slotted ebony board, but as I haven't done this before I'm not sure which jobs I should do before attaching the new board to...

Refretting a fingerboard with worn edges

Thanks for the replies guys. :) How deep are the inlays likely to be? I'm a bit worried about sanding through them.

Refretting a fingerboard with worn edges

Hi guys, this is my second refret, and the first with a fret press. I started pressing in the frets (Jescar FW57110, pre-radiused to 12"), but I've found that the fret ends aren't seating properly. I checked the board with a radius gauge and it turns out the board only has a 12" radius across...

Gibson SG - ugly heel repair

Thanks for those links w666. The slots are about 0.045", so LMII's FW75 wire might be worth considering. Thanks kakerlak. I made the two bridge plugs in my StewMac nut and saddle vice. It's great for that sort of thing. The holes were just over 10mm, so I did the work on the plugs by eye...

Gibson SG - ugly heel repair

Thanks for the replies guys. Whilst waiting for the lacquer to harden I've been working on the bridge. The original harmonica bridge is long gone. I thought about finding another but they seem pretty expensive considering no one seems to like them. In the end I decided to convert to an ABR-1...

    Nut Files....Recommendations?

I've got some of the StewMac gauged nut slotting files. I don't have anything to compare them to, but I've been happy with them. I started off with just three of them, and now I'm up to six.

Gibson SG - ugly heel repair

Thanks for the replies guys! I'm going to stick with the current finish; the repairs don't really bother me because I think however it turns out it's going to look better than it did. Here are some pictures of where I'm up to. So far I've put about a dozen coats of clear nitro on the heel...

Gibson SG - ugly heel repair

That hole seems to be the original strap button hole. I'm going to move the button back there and plug the hole in the upper horn.

Gibson SG - ugly heel repair

This is where I'm up to with the SG: The screw holes weren't lined up very well, so I enlarged them a little to make them a bit neater. I cut some 1/4" and 3/8" plugs from mahogany and glued these in with Titebond. Next I'm going to fill the little gaps that are left with some epoxy mixed...

Gibson SG - ugly heel repair

Thanks for the info Kris. Thanks ARandall; would I need to sand the area at all first?

Gibson SG - ugly heel repair

Thanks ARandall, would you advise opening up the break to reset it? How could it be made less noticeable?

Gibson SG - ugly heel repair

The plate is off: Three of the screws wouldn't budge, so I ended up having to drill into them and get them out with a screw extractor. One of the screws broke so I will have to drill out what's left of it.

Gibson SG - ugly heel repair

Thanks for the replies guys! I'm not sure if it's epoxy or Titebond. I'm happy to leave the joint if it's stable, it's the plate I really want to get rid of. I guess I need to take it off and see if the whole thing falls apart! Thanks for the links pinefd, I looked at those threads whilst...

Gibson SG - ugly heel repair

Hi, this is my first post here. It looks like a great place! I've just bought my next project which is a 1974 SG Standard. It is missing most of the hardware but is in okay shape, with the exception of this repair at the heel: The seller said it was fine under string tension, and it...
