Proof Gibsons aren’t always prone to headstock breaks and tuning instability!

I bought a use Les Paul from GC last month and it also shipped without the case, with a layer of bubble wrap around it. It survived. When I called them to locate the case, this conversation took place: “Les Paul without a case, are you Dave?” “No, I’m Nick” “Oh, some guy named Dave from Ohio...

    Full Face Respirators?

Oh, and one more addition... Every time you put your respirator on, you should perform a fit check. Cover the cartridges with your hands and inhale. The mask should get sucked in against your face, and you should not be able to inhale. If you feel air seeping in around your nose or chin...

    Full Face Respirators?

I don't paint guitars, but i'm a safety consultant for a living, so I can give you some pointers from that prospective. -Full face respirators have a higher protection factor than half face (50 vs 10). So all things being equal, the full face provides 5 times the filtration of a half face with...

Opinions on these replacement nuts? (video)

Oh, thanks for the observation. I’ll have a look at that one! It sounds like the consensus is that they’re too deep. I think I’ll try Freddy’s suggestion, and if oil doesn’t alleviate it, I will ask the luthier how he feels about removing material from the top to make the slots more shallow.

Opinions on these replacement nuts? (video)

Thanks for the clarification, that makes sense. I guess I should’ve been more specific though. I understand that the slots don’t NEED to be deep. But seeing as the strings are round, is there any more side contact happening in a slot that’s at exactly 1/2 of the string diameter in depth, than...

Opinions on these replacement nuts? (video)

Yes it does. His job was, “diagnose and rectify the tuning issues these guitars are having”, with the info that I believed it was an issue with the nuts. His diagnosis was, “Gibson cut the slots at too much of angle. They’ve worn too deep and the nuts need to be replaced to get the guitar to...

Opinions on these replacement nuts? (video)

Nice! I also had a blobeye WRX (‘04 Sedona Red wagon), and I had a white Bugeye wagon. The blobeye was Cobb stage 2, and the Bugeye was stage 2 dynotune. Both very fun cars. Though your build was definitely a few healthy steps passed my cars. Nice job on that one. If Freddy’s oil suggestion...

Opinions on these replacement nuts? (video)

I haven’t been to an event in a few season, but yeah, I do enjoy autoX. Nice to see a fellow gearhead! The beeswax seems to be doing the trick for lube, but I feel like I shouldn’t have to lubricate a nut for it to work properly. Thanks Freddy, I’ll try some oil. Is there a particular brand...

Opinions on these replacement nuts? (video)

I recently started a thread where 2 of my Gibsons developed tuning issues because the strings were binding at the nut. I took them to a local luthier and he said both guitars needed new nuts. He installed new bone nuts and now the new ones are still binding. He tried to re-work them to no...

Recurring nut problems and tuning issues.

As a follow up: I took the 339 and Les Paul to a luthier today. He said the nut slots on both guitars were angled too shallow at factory, which caused them to wear quickly and bind. He said the Les Paul nut was also cut too low. He’s replacing both with bone. I’ll report back with the results.

Recurring nut problems and tuning issues.

Thanks for the replies everyone here's some pics and more info for clarification. I'm using Ernie ball 10-46 and typically do 3 wraps around the post (no knot or anything, just straight wrap with the 2 "kinks" at the post), more wraps for small strings. My tail pieces are set so the strings...

Recurring nut problems and tuning issues.

I have 3 separate Gibsons that were playing just fine, and developed tuning issues due to binding at the nut. I'm looking for advice on what to do here. Clearly the nuts were working fine at some point, but over the course of a few months or so, these guitars slowly developed tuning issues to...

    ES-339 case options?

Good to know. Thanks. And it has the added benefit of not carrying around a case that says "Gibson Custom" on it. It mind as well say "steal me". It sounds like the Epiphone is the way to go.

    ES-339 case options?

Thanks for the reply and info. Do you have any advice as to where is the cheapest place to buy an Epic case? I see a few used ones on eBay Reverb, and may just go that route. I don't care what it looks like. I just want something I can slide into the car and not care about it getting scraped up...

    ES-339 case options?

Are there any budget priced form fitting cases out there for the ES-339? I gig a lot, but I want to keep my Gibson case from getting destroyed. I know I can buy an Epiphone 339 case, but are there other options out there?

Loxx strap locks vs Gibson screw size?

Thanks. It is local, but the guitar is in the shop on consignment, so they are averse to messing with it unless we come to a deal. I'm sure I'll be able to pull them out and have a look before any money changes hands, but it would be nice to know what I'm getting into beforehand. Hopefully...

Loxx strap locks vs Gibson screw size?

That’s correct. Unfortunately, the previous owner did bother with them. If I buy it, I want them off, and I want to know if I’m going to have to run into issues. This is why I need to know about Loxx in particular.

Loxx strap locks vs Gibson screw size?

I’m considering purchase of a guitar at a local shop that has Loxx strap locks installed on it. Are the screws on these things any larger than the factory Gibson screws? I want to know if the guitar had to be drilled. It’s a 339 if that matters. (I know this is the LP section, but you guys...

Neck heavy SG's...who's moved the strap to the horn?

Thanks. Yeah, I've been putting up with it for 17 years, but it's making me gravitate towards my other guitars. I'm not sure I've ever seen a perfect Gibson, but I'm happy you like your guitars. Come play my '61 Reissue and I'll show you how "fake" this issue is. Haha. This is actually a fair...

Neck heavy SG's...who's moved the strap to the horn?

For those of you with dive bombing, neck heavy SGs...have you moved the strap button to the back of the upper horn? Did it improve the balance?
