    The mostly-hand-tools-in-an-apartment build

I guess that's possible... I did the majority of the leveling the old fashioned way, I just used the under-string to dial it in. ...so I wasn't actually taking much off by that point.

If you google it, their web site will come up. I just ordered it off ebay because I had money in my paypal account. Shipping took a couple of weeks from Japan, but I must say that it was worth it. ...the kit is also freaking awesome for $40. They give you the leveling beam, a ton of sticky back...

    The mostly-hand-tools-in-an-apartment build

Wanted to come back with an update for you guys. This build is officially 100% DONE, and the guitar is set up probably better than any other guitar I own. Let me tell you really quickly what I did to get it here from the buzzing problem I was having. In hindsight, I think my problem was that...

New truss rod slid in no problem, so everything is good. Now just need to decide whether I'm going to re-fret or not...

    Fret Leveling/Buzzing

Cool, thanks for those measurements! ...it sounds like I'm actually not far off, just chasing the unattainable, perhaps. My 68 LP was owned by Rocky Athas, so it stands to reason it probably has the best possible set up that I may not quite to be able to achieve with my somewhat amateur luthier...

cost of building guitars from scratch

This. When I actually have time to work on stuff I stop eating and sleeping because I can't get out of the zone! ...as one that has recently been through this, good tools will probably be one of your greatest expenditures. Past that, it's just the quality of wood and hardware that you...

    Fret Leveling/Buzzing

That actually makes a lot of sense, thank you. In theory, then, skinny little fender frets should produce less buzz than my fat jumbo frets... I understand that some buzz is expected, but this wasn't quite the normal buzz... something is a little bit off. I'm hoping my new strategy will do...

    Fret Leveling/Buzzing

...also... just as a general question, why do uncrowned frets buzz more? I believe it's true (from experience) I'm just having a hard time grasping the physics. If the fret is hitting the string, it's hitting the string wether it's a nice crown or a wider contact area. ...is it more a question...

    Fret Leveling/Buzzing

Yaaa, well we'll see. I'm interested to try it. My frets are pretty worn down, luckily I'm used to the fretless wonder feel, but if I don't have to remove much more, it will be fine. Otherwise, a re-fret may be in order also. If this doesn't work, I give up and live with moderately high action.

    Fret Leveling/Buzzing

Ok, as long as I'm doing the right thing, I'll chug on. The new truss rod will be here soon, my plan of action is to set the neck itself perfectly straight and then use one of those fret levelers with the strings on. I'll take them off, crown them, and hopefully that will do the trick. Is...

    Fret Leveling/Buzzing

Well, the first time I did it by the book and crowned them all nice, but I was getting very bad buzz from the high frets (as in is seems like the buzz was coming from the high frets on the fret board, we'll say 17-22). Chords and whatnot were fine, no buzz. So, I just added some more fall away...

    Fret Leveling/Buzzing

I've been discussing this in my build thread, but I thought maybe I'd make another discussion thread to get a broader set of opinions. I finally got my build together, but I'm having trouble getting the action lower than ~4/64" without getting buzzing (can't hear it through the amp, but it...

    The mostly-hand-tools-in-an-apartment build

...well I'm still learning how to correct mistakes... in an attempt to get my action very low and eliminate the buzzing, I tried leveling the frets. No progress really. I tried adding some extra bow into the truss rod to mimic the tension of the string and leveling... not much good. So, that was...

...things have been busy, but I finally sacrificed a night of sleep and finished this thing. Wet sanded it (mostly) flat, I was a little nervous around the edges, then cut it out with a auto high speed buffer and polished it with the same. The quality of the finish honestly shocked me, I was not...

Lol, they're coming from the same board of mahogany, they have to be sisters!!! The quilt top with this nice, classy, mostly plain fingerboard is a real good girl. The one I just finished, she's like, lady in the street, but buy me a drink and I'm a freak in the bed. The EKG one with this flame...
