Hey everyone!

I have a brand new R6 that I bought from Dave's Guitars back in November. I put on a set of .9's when I got i and now that the summer time humidity has come through, the guitar is in need of a neck adjustment because is was pin straight and needed a little relief. The truss rod nut is all the way loose and won't give me any relief without screwing off. I ended up putting .10s on it to give it some kind of relief with the higher tension but it's not sitting right with me that I can't have my favorite string gauge on a $4500 guitar due to a flaw with the neck.

Would you guys send the guitar in for a warranty claim if this happened to you? Also, if I did send it in would they fix it or just send me a new one?

Agreed.
Never been in that shop, but I’ve heard good about them.

If Gibson needs to be involved?
Let them do it.

Only problem I foresee is that you may be flipping pages on the calendar waiting for a resolution.
Gibson does not move fast.

Oof, sorry to hear that. Truss rod issues on an R6 aren’t super common, but they do happen. If it’s not adjusting properly or feels maxed out, definitely worth contacting Gibson — especially if you’re still within the warranty window. They can be picky, so make sure you have all your documentation and maybe even a tech’s assessment in writing. Fingers crossed it gets sorted without a hassle!

I’ll reach out to them today. I live in NYC so I’m guessing I’ll have to ship it out to them and then they’ll have to ship it back to Gibson. Really feeling buyers remorse right now. You’d think a custom shop instrument would have better QC

Oh, that sucks.
I didn’t realize you bought it online.

It’s a lot easier when you can walk back into the store with it.

I dunno.
The dealer didn’t do anything wrong.
A truss rod problem is a Gibson problem, so maybe call them first and see what they recommend.

If they tell you to send it back to the dealer, then contacting Dave’s is your next step.

Again, I dunno.

If you are in NYC, maybe Gibson will have you take it to an authorized repair guy near you for assessment.

I hate the idea of a guitar being shipped hither and yon.

Yea I hate the idea too and that’s compounded by the fact that I’ve never shipped a guitar. I could just suck it up and play .10s for the rest of the guitar’s life and hope that with each passing winter I’ll have more adjustable relief but again it just doesn’t sit well in my mind for such an expensive guitar. Also, it’s a great weight for an R6 at 8lbs 9oz. Most I’ve seen are 9lbs+.

I understand Gibson and consumers wanting Historic accuracy with reissues,.. but it seems long overdue for a bi-directional truss rod. Even for the regular USA production.

The Gibson truss rod only removes relief,.. its the string tension that provides relief. If the neck already has a bit of back bow,.. string tension alone may not help,.. unless you use really big strings.

Not a truss rod issue,.. it's a neck back-bow issue,.. which is more serious and should be covered under the warranty.

That makes sense. How would I go about articulating that to Gibson? My worry is that they’ll wave me away and I’m stuck with a lemon.

They should understand the issue,.. it wouldn't be their first rodeo. They shouldn't give you any grief.

Just tell them you have a back-bow issue that the string tension alone isn't fixing. They should fully understand.

@mudface is right.

But again, be prepared to wait.
Patience is required when dealing with Gibson, though they may surprise you occasionally.

Yea I figured turn around times would be abysmal. I sent them a support message so we’ll see how it goes. Would it be better to call instead?

I prefer to call them.
But I’m old-school.
Just got off the phone with them. They’ll be sending me a shipping label. Now I have to learn how to properly ship a guitar which is stressful. Would fedex usually provide all the boxes and packing material I need?

Go to your nearest guitar store, they’ll have boxes (possibly gibson ones) with the cushion still in it. Call first though.

You might have to pay for it.
Two different times, I paid $10 for a Gibson shipping box at Guitar Center.

They didn’t have any boxes.
The more I leaned on them, well, it turns out they had boxes.
But they didn’t want to get rid of them.

Whatever…
I’ll pay you.
I need a box.

Assholes…

As a repair technician with a lot of experience handling Gibson warranty claims, I would like to elaborate on this, to help you.

At this very moment, I cannot make a proper post.

I would like to get back to this post, later today.

The outcome of your claim, greatly depends on how you approach it and what you say.

I've shipped dozens of Les Pauls with zero issues. I always use 2 boxes (inner + outer). I make sure there is absolutely no movement inside the packaging - you should hear nothing at all when you shake the box. I also pray to random pagan gods, but that's purely optional. ;)

Good luck.
