I just picked this up yesterday! It is a 1987 American Standard Stratocaster in gunmetal blue. This was my very first Fender I owned when I was 20 years old and I have been looking for another this year and color for quite awhile. I had just gotten a job in the textile mill and was making decent money. I was a head banging metalhead back then until I found Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Texas Flood album and that changed the course of my musical journey if not my life. I became a lifelong blues fan after that and had to have a Stratocaster. I had a black Les Paul Pro at the time and took it to trade in on a new Strat. I originally wanted a black one with a maple board but all the local music shops only seemed to have this gunmetal blue Strat with rosewood board in stock so I begrudgingly got one and fell In love with that guitar. I used to carry that guitar everywhere I went and hate that I ever sold it. This one popped up right down the road from me on Craigslist. He wanted $1500 for it. But after seeing it and playing it for about 20 minutes I knew I wanted it. We came together at $1250 and I brought it home. He was the second owner of the guitar. He bought it from his drummer who bought it new in 1987. It is all original (yes the pickups too. They have just yellowed over time). It is in excellent shape especially for a 38 year old guitar. The pickups sound amazing and the neck is fantastic and plays like butter. Very smooth no fret sprout at all. You can’t even feel the frets running your hand along the neck. No fret wear that I can see. He said he gigged it for about a year but went back to Les Pauls. It still has the hang tag and owners manual in the OHSC. I am in love all over again. I can see this becoming my number one guitar. Here is the only photo I took of it because I don’t have very good lighting.

Seems so (though gone before I acquired it) - this is from the ‘96 catalogue, although a lot of the photos are of the previous year’s models as often happens.

BTW and FYI those colour options:

With a rosewood board, 3-colour Sunburst only.

With a maple board the options were Black, Candy Apple Red, Crimson Burst, Brown [2-colour] Sunburst, Vintage White or Sonic Blue.

LPB and Olympic White were Limited Editions only, with matching headstocks.

No sign of Gunmetal by ‘96, sorry!

I have an E3 serial number American Standard Strat from early '87. I think the quality was especially good back then as they were still ramping up production. Congrats and HNGD!
