I’ll never forget when I finally saw the album cover for Texas flood as a kid, I was probably 9 or 10 - I asked my dad, “that’s a young white guy playing that music and singing?!” :laugh2:

My dad played a lot of blues stuff and my musical horizons were still pretty narrow - this was outside the norm of what my mind associated that kind of music with.

Then I got the El Mocambo video and the first song out of the gate was Testify. My whole guitar playing trajectory shifted that day.

I started devouring anything related to him I could. The story of Stevie’s life is a wild one. There’s a good biography, still have my worn out paperback copy:

Much later, I got this book as a gift. Lots of great photos and details about the front half of his career:

There’s a second volume to this that I don’t have; just ordered it.

SRV was one of those rare players that changed the landscape of what guitar represented to the world. Small club to be in. Once in a lifetime talent.

That's a great DVD. Live from Austin and Montreux are killer too.

SRV wasn't just a killer guitar player and singer, he could actually write great songs.

First time I ever heard him was when I was driving through Texas on my way to LA and The Sky is Crying came on the radio. I was like who the fuck is that? I have to know!

His playing was wonderful, phrasing was astounding, timing was wild, I’d never heard anyone do the things he was doing.

Thank god we have the albums he left behind

A newly clean and sober SRV, sharp as a tack. Alas, fate can be a cruel mistress.
