It's gorgeous now.... I was looking at it and imagining what that will look like in a couple years of playing.... Dayum that will age nicely....

What a fantastic looking top! that color…. Wow!

Whether its a build from scratch, a repair, or custom work like this, I can’t imagine anyone going to someone else other than Dave.

Amazing work! Thinking about the entire process…. Fucking amazing!

That's a huge compliment, Victor. I'm humbled. Thank you.

You know, I kinda worked out a method...that worked.

I wanted to have virtually zero orange peel, because I can't load it with clear and spend an eternity of elbow-grease sanding through all the fine grits to eliminate the previous grit's scratches. I don't have the mil thickness of clear lacquer to handle that.

I had two coats of clear, just sprayed until it was shiny. one session, 1 hour wait, and then another.

That is thick enough to lightly wet-sand with 600, if you're careful. I didn't press hard, just smoothed out the rough.

Then a top-coat of 70% thinner, 30% lacquer. Then another light wet-sand, this time with 1000 grit.

Then another light 70/30 coat, and that's it. Done.

Now that it's dried for 4 hours, I take a look, and it has flowed out beautifully.

NO orange peel. Seriously. It is ready to buff as-is.

Incredible work! Would you like to consider to do something like this to a Studio Premium Plus that I adore? (add Body+neck binding+refin?)

Certainly!

I have a second top, a sister to this one you see. Same board. Another guy mentioned he might want it, but first come, first serve. Shoot me a PM for details.

Edit-- I think I read that wrong. You don't need a top, you basically need a "59 treatment" or thereabouts to your existing guitar, no chambering, yes?

Will you match the old neck binding color with the newer of the top, or the idea is to leave it like this telling the story of the guitar (ala Greeny)?

I can't match the binding color, so it will be left to yellow on its own. It'll even out a bit in a few years.

Guitar is done, I'll post finished pics tomorrow.

Final weight assembled and strung, 7.3 - 7.5 pounds.

My digital fishing scale (was very precise) quit working. So the old bathroom scale was used.

Far cry from the 10+ lbs it used to be. And a flame-top upgrade too! Plus a proper burst-coloring.

I would call that a success.

Final pics in a few..
