We are ready to rumble..

Lemon base coat:

I did this at a gun setting of half fan-pattern and half trigger. Trigger controls how much material from the gun cup mixes with the air and lays down on the target. I need coverage for the base coat, but the custom brown mix for the upper bout and edges requires a lighter material flow and about 1/4 fan pattern. I don't want it laying down volumes of brown, and I don't want a wide fan pattern creeping brown into the center.

I'm going to shoot the brown next, and explain my technique along the way..

You hold your gun at a 45-degree angle to the edge, and lightly dust until you get the depth and coverage you want
You cannot shoot it with full flow, for it will simply cover the area with no control.

After this, we will shoot a minimum of clear over the color..

Thanks guys..

Today I'm going to go over it very, very lightly with 600 wet to smooth it out some, then spray a thinned topcoat for a final. It only has two one-pass coats of clear on it now, and the initial color coats are very thin. So I have to be extra-careful not to burn through it.

Flame maple can be "ridgy". I'm not going to super level everything. That would defeat the purpose of our objective.

Sanded to 600 wet, then 1000 wet, then final top coat of thinned lacquer.

gardens = hardens?

No. Gardens. One of my secret aging techiques is to go to the garden and plant Les Pauls up to the 22nd fret, so they look like rows of Gibson corn. When they start sprouting nice, ripe mandolin necks, it's harvest time!

yeah, "gardens" is a cellphone auto-screw..

What a fantastic looking top! that color…. Wow!

Whether its a build from scratch, a repair, or custom work like this, I can’t imagine anyone going to someone else other than Dave.

Amazing work! Thinking about the entire process…. Fucking amazing!
