Now you can go with the LED puck lights.This is the drop ceiling I'm pulling down. Way back in the 80s when this place was built they had those recessed lights. Since then ,they'd got rid of the hidden lights, covered it with sheetrock, and put in those can lights. Pulling all that out will dramatically raise the ceiling and make room for taller cabinets. I think there will still be plenty of room for the canned lights.
Now you can go with the LED puck lights.
All you need above the drywall is room for the power supply. You can mount them where you need them to be... not just where the joists allow. The lights are as thin as the drywall, so they can actually be mounted under a joist.
