Hi everyone,
I haven't used the forum in +10 years. So, earlier today I went on The Les Paul Forum and some other Les Paul related facebook page, to share some issue that happened on my 2011 R0, you know just to share with the community, and ask how people store they guitar at home and what not.
here's the post : https://www.facebook.com/groups/243...tif_id=1747680873797611&notif_t=group_comment

Somehow it sparked so much controversies - I have been away social medias for pretty much that many years - , and some good people too who were eloquent in sharing their knowledge and experience. Among some people who right from the bat doubted it's a real Reissue or questioning my answers ( like I've never oiled the fretboard and whatnot) and the biggest claim being I'm faking, questioning the dealer I bought it from and " this is not a real Gibson Reissue because of the binding Gibson uses on R-series is much thicker".

Anyhow, I bought it in 2012 from Mark's Guitar Loft, under recommendation from many of you.
I kinda don't really care what those guys say, but care more about Mark's reputation !
Again this is just to share to the community.

Thanks for reading, have a great week !

It looks like your Binding is trashed.
A good Luthier (Lt. Dave) could replace that.
A good case humidifier will help prevent it from happening again.

I'm familiar with Alexis Korner from his moderating of Gibson Les Paul Historic Reissue R8, R9, R0 FB group.

As far as I can tell from the screenshot, he is the one insisting your R9 from Mark's Guitar Loft is a Chibson?

He confidently shares wrong information and then bans members who politely correct him. I got kicked out of the group one time when he was insisting that only the clear coat on Gibsons is nitrocellulose lacquer and I politely tried to explain otherwise. Without further explanation I was out.

All this is to say, his opinions are worth less than used toilet paper.

It looks like the fretboard shrunk from being too dry,... the binding is glued and channeled into the fretboard. It has no where to go and the frets will sprout through as the frets do not shrink. This is where some fret doctor would have helped.

For me, Fret Doctor, and only Fret Doctor.
And here is why...

Yea, I know Fret Doctor. Guitar has been regularly oiled, not always with Fret Doctor, but as Michael Sublowski said some LPs develop cracks where the frets expand into the bind, with expansion/contraction of the neck/fretboard due to dryness/humidity.
I live in an area that got very dry and hot over last year.
Thx mate !

Interesting. Haven't used public group and don't usually use social media. Thx mate !

Yes ! Unfortunately, not based in the US, luthiers are scarce here, and my trusted guy was away on tour, and didn't know when he would come back...

Yes,.. metal, plastic, and wood (and different types of wood) will react differently with Heat/Cold/Humidity and the extreme swings that may occur.

My 1977 LP Custom has a couple of sprouts that look just like yours.

Sorry to hear. In my case, it happened over the last year, I had never seen any cracks between 2012 and last year. I was discussing with another guy who also lives in China, and told me there's a reason why all guitar stores got big humidifiers or temperature controlled rooms, building here aren't well isolated compared to what you can get elsewhere.

It does happen easier on the historics with the thinner binding. Temp swings are the worst culprit as the wood shrinks more than the metal. Cold also makes the binding more brittle. A friend of mine unfortunately left his 2024 in the cold this last winter for over an hour waiting for doors to be unlocked and has binding problems like this now on top of very bad finish problems.

Get a humidity gauge, you want 40% relative humidity minimum so that shrinking wont happen.

I assume you can feel that binding issue, i’d see about repair.
