Never really meant for this to turn into a which is better thread. Was just putting the info out that Gibson sent me. Which is that if you have a standard USA made Gibson and not a custom model or model that specifically states in the specs it has a long tenon then you probably have a short tenon. I don’t care what mine has. If it is sustain that the long tenon is supposed to be better with I don’t have to worry. My new Gibson has sustain for days.
Sorry. Just trying to be funny.

Well there have been LP models from the USA plant,.. that did have a long tenon.

The 2008 to 2012 Les Paul Standard from the USA plant had the long and large tenon.

The 2013 model Les Paul Standard had the regular Historic type long tenon.

Could be others but they wouldn't be regular production models.

The 2008 - 2012 long and large tenon.

Can I Photoshop my transitional tenon to a long one, like it was done in the picture ? I guess it was too expensive to put a long tenon LP on the bench saw.
In that pic, it's the early '70s transitional tenon that was photoshopped. Gibson did that pic, presumably with seconds that they were going to toss anyway. They were making long tenons and the old style short rocker tenon back then, but they haven't done a transitional tenon since '74/'75.

Also important to note that the pic shows the old rocker tenon used from '75 until sometime in the 21st century. The modern short tenon is a full contact tenon. The bottom of the tenon is glued to the floor of the pocket, doesn't have the big gaps on the bottom. It's now exactly like the long tenon, just not as long.

Edit to add: the original pic from Gibson's "Guitar University" page didn't include the transitional mockup. It was just long and short rocker. Some Norlin enthusiast added the transitional mockup.

Actually the rocker style tenon was discarded a lot earlier than that.

There was constant changes being made during the Norlin period.

Like the toggle switch route to the control cavity went from round to a square route and the notorious Swiss cheese lightning holes. Smaller less notable changes like the control cavity route change many times,.. the rocker style tenon was gone by 1976.

I’ve seen a number of neck replacements and that style of tenon didn’t last.

In addition to the aforementioned tenons in standards from 2008-2013, you can't follow the "rules" regarding the bridge studs either. Les Paul Classics during the '90s and early 2000s, along with Les Paul Juniors and Specials had ABR1 bridges that were installed directly into the wood. And these "rules" these aren't counting all the guitar of the week/month/special run stuff over the years either.

Oh yeah, none of this really matters unless you want a Historic reissue; a good guitar is a good guitar.

Just like a booty enhancement.

Tenon butt extension !
There’s a market,.. there’s a way.

Who says it wouldn’t be as effective,.. have I grabbed a fake ass?… :hmm:.. it’s doesn’t seem likely for my age,.. but I’m sure it’s more likely to happen today.

Fake tenon extension may prove to be highly effective,.. and yet it may prove to be retarded like those fat lip Botox injections.

To each their own
