I've not played my SG for a few months, and when I opened the case the strings were covered in rust.
This has never happened before, and I was wondering if the case is somehow holding moisture and releasing it over time.
Also, the E string was snapped at the point between the pickups, so I guess...

What I meant was, using the tone control to roll off bass on the neck pickup, and roll off treble on the bridge means the sound I'm chasing is somewhere in-between.
My SG doesn't seem as extreme in it's differences.
(I am playing though a Beano, so this is also a factor.)
As it is now, I'm finding the neck too bassy, and the bridge too bright.
This is causing me to use the tone control (for more treble on the neck, and more bass on the bridge), but this seems to be counterintuitive to me.
